Injector cleaning has nothing to do with Atkinson. That's the dual injection, not related to VVT-i

I was in the market for a gen 3 DCLB (which means I have no choice but the auto) and wasn't too impressed with the 3.5, especially in the auto. I thought the manual felt good. My new 4.0 only has 26,000 miles on it and it has some serious pull at low RPM. I do like the interior of the gen 3 much better however.

Someone was making intake plenum spacers fir the 2nd gens which "made" all the intake runners 1/2" long which moved the torque curve down a bit (obviously losing a bit on the very top end) it made a decent improvement down low and in the mid range. Would this be an option on the 3.5?(of course it can be done but not sure how much it will help or if u can find someone with a cnc setup) other than that SC or turbo is about it looks like.

Oh and if u didnt wanna spend money on lower geared rear end u could always get shorter tires and get basically the same results for less money and no mechanical inclination required

It runs cleaning while using port injection, and it mainly uses port injection during Atkinson cycle. When it's in Otto it's running mainly direct injection

New gears or 5.7 tundra mod. I'm seriously considering this myself. I get 14-16 mpg with my 4.0 taco. I've been looking at crewmax tundras

Hey... why don't you offer to trade trucks with him... sounds like you'd get the nice interior... he'd get the low end torque... everybody is Happy again......:bananadance:

What's so attractive about low rpm power? I get it if you have an automatic but given that you have a manual it's all too easy to keep it in the power band...gas mileage will take a hit but who cares...not like it's good when you keep the rpms low anyway and the V8s that do put out good low rpm power get terrible mpg too.

It's not like Toyota didn't consider the implications of the new motor. Go ahead and rev the piss out of it, you aren't going to break anything. It reaches max torque at a higher RPM, toyota was aware of it and I'm sure they tested it to make sure it was ok.

    Pretty much this.

Physics doesn't work that way. Heavier flywheel will slow down engine acceleration, but will also slow down engine deceleration. It won't create more torque..... if that were the case, we could all use a 50cc engine with a 500lb flywheel.

Also, if you notice, the transmission stays in a lower gear as the RPMs are kept higher.

You can't make headers for this thing due to the way it is designed, but you might be able to redesign the exhaust system to sacrifice high rpm power for low rpm torque. Long small exhaust is good for torque.

I really think the only option to get more low rpm power would be a supercharger.

Well, I don't like the engine screaming at 4000 rpms just because I want to pass another car on the highway. Low torque will accelerate the vehicle without screaming by the vehicle.

Low RPM power is better for towing too. That is why big V8's can often tow loads with better MPG than smaller displacement V6's. Engines don't breath as efficiently at super high RPM. A 3.5 V6 has to work harder than a 4.0 V6 or a 5.7 V8 to haul the same load.

Haha screaming? Shiiiit... a Tacoma at redline is docile in my opinion.

I dunno I expected my tacoma to be a total dog after reading everything here prior to purchase and it's just not to me. I can easily pass someone at 2k-3k rpms in whatever gear. And once you break 3k rpm it pulls hard all the way to redline. I do have the manual though and thus the 4.3 gears

Sure but the V8s get shit for gas mileage while not towing so it's a wash in the end I'd think.
