For my truck, it brought the power back to stock with the 35's. Maybe even a little quicker?

Did they dyno your truck after tuning it?

No... because I switched to 35s at the same time.

The heavier flywheel will average the firing impulses of the engine, at lower RPMs, but it will not increase the torque.

That's your only ticket, for more torque, at this time.

The regear would help. You are right that the tranny would up shift faster. Toyota CAN move the shift points up a smidgen for you... If they would do it... We also need to remember, this is a 3.5l engine in a 4400 lb vehicle. This thing has the weight of a full sized truck. The torque, of this engine is not bad at all for a 3.5l, and Toyota did a good job delivering torque. The problem is the weight of the truck. Regear, and adjust shift points, and that's about the best you will do without a BIG money forced induction and retune scenario.

Did the retune require higher octane fuel?

    Turbo diesel
whole top end is rebuilt, stage 3 colt cams
    bosio 750 injectors
    Bosio fuel pump
    garrent VNT 110 36mm turbo @ 22PSI
    kerma TDI stage 3 tuning
    3BAR MAP
    Unitronic stage 2 intercooler

daily driven on a reduced tune of 196hp 311lbs @2800 RPM
then all power pretty much drops off at 3700 rpm
Car has a lot done to it. If it was gas I would agree not likely without a shit load of work. But the pump duece TDI can push out 220lbs factory just with tuning to run 16psi. Factory is 190lbs 11 psi.

Its easy to get the engine to make the power...its a different story to run it all the time and have the transmission last. I've got 240k KM transmission is really starting to show wear.

Wow the hate is REAL hah

To the OP: let me ask you, have you gotten the Tranny TSB done? I have a 2017 and I must say it drives like a different truck. I cant believe they come off the line with that issue. I have never had a car downshift to high gear when I started aggressively accelerating (like a freeway on-ramp). Now, pre TSB if I mashed it, the truck would flat GO. But it was a kind of jerky, power bandy (<tech terms there yo) sort of acceleration.

Post TSB acceleration is a lot smoother, and the truck doesnt hunt for gears as much in cruise mode.

If you need more lower end power use the ECT, but your MPG will suffer.

    My 2 cents

It keeps getting lost in this discussion but the OP has the 6 speed MANUAL transmission.

Legendary ECT button is nowhere to be found and no amount of tuning is going to improve his shift points

    Ya I agree.
The original post was to woodrow just talking about its going to be weird for me coming to a NA truck that has 278hp 240lbs roughly, when I'm used to more.
But ya definitely not a fair comparison.

The whole point was with all I have done and the difference in power of what I am used to, the taco doesn't feel that sluggish. Its a gas engine vs diesel so torque will definitely be different and power delivery will be as well.
My car red lines at 4500. I lose power when the taco probably starts making it.
I've test driven 6 different 3rd gens now, all of them felt fine for power. Sure its no V8, but for a V6 midsize it felt fine. On the highway when I was driving them it felt sluggish while in 6th gear. Once it downshifted and RPM went up it accelerated no problem. Everyone seems to complain it has no power, I really don't find it that bad. I feel like people are thinking because its a midsize it should be compared to an S10 or something. For a 3.5L V6 and the applications I plan to use the taco for (home renos, side jobs and overlanding/camping/wheeling) has more than enough power.

Just look at Expedition Overland's new 3rd gen. No engine mods just regeared to 4.88 to help with added weight and they're taking on some of the toughest trails now. Some of which are logging roads like OP was complaining about where he had no power. Many are saying go 4.88 and it should be better, but for some reason he seems like he's against regearing.

It's been mentioned in other threads too. The days of throwing an exhaust and air intake on a vehicle and doing some tuning to greatly increasing the power are gone.
Unless you start getting into a turbo or supercharger, really won't be getting much more power out of them. The taco's aren't even all that low on power, its just the whole set up of how they deliver the power. The gearing in the axles and transmissions don't put the power down that great. You can make all the power in the world if you don't have it paired with a good transmission to put that power down its not going to do anything.
