Is there a way to disable the daytime lights on my '02 TRD? I hate running off-road in the way, way, way out-back in the day time with the lights on. On my other truck (brand C), I removed the bulbs from the daytime lights, but on my Tacoma, it is the headlights that come stay on in the day time. I hate it, but I don't want to disable my headlights for night time use.

Not sure if the '02 is the same as the '00 in this regard, but I disabled my DRLs as my first mod - hated them, hahahahaha

Thank you for the "education"..........it seems that these Toyota trucks were not made for the average guy to "modify" easily. I'll take a closer look at my '02 to see if it looks the same under the hood as your '00. I "might" be tempted to add a switch if I can do it without disassembling the dash. In my previous '94 (pre-Taco) I ended up taking most of the dash apart on 2 occasions; first time was to disable the chime that made noise each time the door was opened with the key in the ignition and the second time was when I added power steering and a smaller diameter steering wheel (so a person over 6' tall could get in and out without having to bend into a pretzel).
So far, on the '02, all I have done is disable the chime so it doesn't drive us crazy when the door is opened with the key in the ignition----that mod was easier on the '02 than on the '94.
I know someone will want to know "why" we wanted the chime to go away,........we drive out in the back country/desert quite a bit and often we get out for a minute or two to look at something interesting and we don't want to have to pull the key or listen to the chime each time we stop and get out.
Again, thank you for your pics and answer!

This is not a Canadian truck, as far as I know. The original owner bought it new in Reno, NV. I have owned it for about 2 years and it has 118K miles on it. I had the 120K "tune-up", timing belt, etc performed on it right after I bought it at around 116K miles. The original Bilsteins were flat worn out so I replaced those. Otherwise I think all is original (except tires, of course).
Thanks to all for their replies and help.

    Sure thing!

I wasn't a fan of the chime either - and for the same reason as you. Ditched mine by adding switches (do you sense a theme here? ;)) to the kick panels that control the light+chime. Wrote that one up here: The camping mod - disabling the courtesy lights

OK....I went into the garage and looked under the hood at our '02.....I found the gray colored unit that you show in your photo (with 2 white/green wires coming out of it). The unit was on the driver's side near the firewall in our truck and instead of white/green wires, our unit has red wires. Now for the question: before we bought this truck, rodents had gotten under the hood and chewed up a bunch of stuff. The previous owner had the local dealership "fix" everything, but I guess they missed this part because one of our red wires (the nearest to the fender) is chewed completely in half! I have not found anything that does not work on our truck, so just exactly "what" does this wire control? My dome light works, cruise works, lights, horn, etc.,........all seem to work fine. What am I missing?
In your photo, our corresponding broken red wire would be the lower one where you have white/green wires.

Who are you talking to and at this point what are you trying to do?
I literally showed you where it's located for your year truck. It's the same as mine.

I think what @TashcomerTexas was saying is that on an '02 (which you and he both have), the better way to do this is to use the Relay Assy Running Light in the cab (looks to be below the steering wheel if I'm understanding his picture correctly), rather than look for a wire in the engine compartment.

I don't think that Relay Assy exists in the '00 Tacoma (what I have), which is why I went for the lights the way I did.

As for the wire in your engine bay that is "chewed through" - I have no idea what it is. You'd have to follow it to a known location and check the pin in order to get a sense of what it's supposed to do.

Thanks for your help! The red wire that is chewed thru will be tough to patch back together----the varmint didn't leave much to work with! I will probably try to patch it back together somehow though....I might be surprised at what it does---LOL.
If I read correctly, TashcomerTexas is saying that cutting the wire he shows will disable the daytime running lights? I found the Asin relay and it is under the steering wheel.

TashcomberTexas.....I'm looking at your photos and I'm seeing 2 wires that are cut: 1 has the blue electric coupler on it and the other is with your knife. Is the one with your knife the one I need to cut to disable the daytime running lights?
    Thanks again for your help!

Sure, but would not that kill the headlights? I just want to get rid of the daytime part, not kill my headlights.....?

Finally... after months of procrastinating over the drl issue, I went online and found 3 places that agreed on what wire to cut to disable the drl. All said to cut the "black wire with the yellow stripe" that goes into the Aisin drl relay (#12 position) under the dash near the steering shaft. OK, so I cut the wire and it did indeed kill the drl....BUT...it also killed my low beam headlights. All I have now is High Beam. My only recourse at this point is to buy a small rocker switch and run the "black wire with yellow stripe" thru the switch; then I will be able to turn off the drl in the daytime (if I want) and then switch on the low beam headlights for night driving.
FYI...pulling the 7.5 amp fuse (marked DRL under the hood) will kill the headlights, period. Also, according to the Inet "experts", cutting the white/green (or white/black) wire in position #2 at the Aisin drl relay will drain the battery. I don't know, I didn't do that after reading one horror story from a guy who found out the hard way.
    Hope this info helps someone.

My daughter has an How do we fix it? Is there a sensor for the lights, if so, where the hell is it located? We have looked all over the Tacoma with the daytime running lights. All the lights come on in the daytime, but once night time comes, she cannot turn on the headlights. She gets the parking lamps, taillights and dash lights, but no headlights. She also has brights if she pulls the lever, but not if she pushes it forward. We have replaced the switch and checked all fuses and relays. Any ideas on why this is happening? And how do we fix it? Also, is there a sensor for the lights, if so, where the hell is it located? Thanks.
