Loads of questions about tacoma! So are the windshields prone to cracking? Seen a lot of them cracked on passenger side up top. Wonder if I should just leave it cracked till PO PO makes me change it. Don’t wanna waste the cash right now...

Depends on how many gravel trucks you drive behind.

Mine's cracked, but I also got hit with a baseball size rock on the highway several years ago. I got it "repaired" but eventually started getting a crack that propagated from it. I saw it travel across the glass one especially cold morning.

Some states require insurance to pay for replacements.

    Does yours?

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I wouldn't say there is any "issue" with the windshield. Just depends on how much, and where you drive (and luck).

I've had my truck over 15 years... I'm on my 3rd windshield.

yes, my OEM was cracked in that spot, then another crack popped up on top behind the mirror
i did have a hood protector that maybe threw sand/gravel up there
loads of highway miles driving behind tractor trailers

i have an aftermarket one now so will see how the chipping goes

CA does. I had my windshield replaced, crap, more than a decade ago and it was an insurance job. I hated it actually. Whatever they did to it, the wind noise was significantly higher than original. I could have just been a minor difference in the shape of the rubber seal, but it was enough. I eventually got used to it, but that's actually one of the reasons I haven't replaced my cracked windshield (again). I'd like to figure out if there's a particular method to return that quiet(er) wind noise.

That, and the fact that it was only a couple months after I got it replaced that I got hit with another rock. It took several years, but that rock chip eventually lead to the crack I mentioned before.

That's an issue with where/how you drive, not the windshield, lol...

I've heard of some vehicles cracking windows because the cab flexes, but that's more of a thing form the Yugoslavian imports not Toyotas...

You know your driving history better than anyone and at least you're honest with yourself about it and your need for full comp insurance :D
I would give you strange looks too:rofl::D

Got a chip in my 3rd gen front glass a week ago. Driving to work this morning a crack formed, stretching across the whole windshield. Scheduled Safelite to come out and replace it this Friday. I have heard that these Tacoma windshields are prone to cracking, don't think anyone has the science to back that up but...whatever.

Only let them install PPG, or PGW now, or Pilkington glass. Those two make most of the OEM glass used in auto manufacturing

That only really says that windshields have a tendency to get hit with rocks in similar places.

Nothing to do with the truck itself.

I got a chip in mine in 2002 when my truck was only a year old on the passenger side and it never formed a crack. Still have the original windshield. But what I have throughout the entire windshield are thousands of tiny micro nicks, (I guess 18 years of road rash?) that only show when the sun shines on it and exhibit some I suppose prism-like colors mainly red . But these don't inhibit my outward vision a bit.

Replace it (the windshield, not the crack ;) ) before you get written up by the cops...

yes, thousands of them! highway sand in Iowa most likely
i had priced a new OEM windshield for many years, but that glass was pricey and i was also needing new tires
i wanted the shaded EZ-Eye logo in the corner, maybe someday i can get that back
