Before I had a navigator built into the truck, I used my Garmin and I had an altimeter it. I got used to watching it and seeing how high or low I was in different parts of the mountain. I just thought it was a really nice feature and didn't know if it was part of the high end navigation system and I was missing it.

Yep. It shouldn't work off "topo" unless you don't have a good fix.

I was looking for this myself a few days ago and couldn't find.
It was buried deep in the navigation of my 2009 JK. It is kind of a neat function to have in the mountains, more as a curiosity than anything.

It's kind of fun, and somewhat useful. Why Toyota be interested in that????

Wife's Touareg has altimeter (shows elevation) in the Corner of the Nav. Cool feature to watch while cruising through the Rockies.

I don't see why they couldn't have a GPS-enabled altimeter. I'd certainly make use of it and would like to see it.

Plus, Toyota marketing seems keen to distinguish the Tacoma from the competition, to the point of fetishizing something stupid and gimmicky like the GoPro mount. Here, they could stand apart from the crowd with something useful and desired by the base.

Not sure how far they would stand out. My 2013 JK has this feature built into the nav. And as mentioned by another member, his '09 had it.

Shame the Taco doesn't have it. The Garmin I use on the bike does, and I like having it.

The risk is more pitch and terrain than elevation.

I understand that, but thanks. Our avy reports sometimes give elevations where activity is currently being seen.

Altitude is bread and butter to GPS signal parsing. With 12 satellites overhead at any time, it only takes 4 to reliably calculate altitude. The more satellites being received the better the accuracy. I guarantee that the altitude data is known but it was a decision not to display it if the unit doesn't. As someone that has numerous GPS units since paying over $1,000 in 1990 for a handheld Magellan, I can tell you that your $200 Garmin, Lowerance, Thales (Magellan), etc. will run circles around anything built into a vehicle navigation system. The only advantage a built in one has is that they are larger and built into the dash. For $400 you can get a Garmin Nuvi that embarrasses built in ones costing $2,500 or more. With that price you get lifetime map and software updates 4x a year. Most dealers charge $150-200 to update the maps on built in ones.
