No, they just put more letters on the TRD versions so idiots can waste their money. You pay by the letter.

Sarcasm above. Yes there are differences. I'm sure you're confused because they used to put SR5 on the TRD packages which made it really confusing.

Ultimately a SR5 is different from the TRD. But a TRD can be an SR5. Boy that's confusing. I'm sure that's why they went away from it on later models.

TRD stickers are well-known to add 25 wHP and improve MPGs. I read it on the interwebs...

I see you're the guy that just totaled your truck. Assuming that this thread is in anticipation of shopping for a replacement truck. There are far too many differences between the years and packages to type out here. Just start doing your research and determine what year/package is right for your needs. A good place to start is to look up the factory brochures for whatever year Taco you may be considering. This will give you an idea of what features come with each package. When I was shopping for a Taco, I was very specific in what I was looking for. Right down to TRD Off road, 4WD, speedway blue, access cab, with a tow package, and at a price that I could afford to lay cash on the table and drive away.

He’s asking specifically about the V-6.

AFAIK, there are no differences in the 4.0.

Used Taco shopping is pretty tough. I wanted a TRD OR double cab, hopefully '09-12, and one I could pay cash for and not go broke.

I found a good one last weekend. It had been in a hailstorm but the dealer put about $2k into it with new tires, hood, windshield, and chrome rear bumper cover. They wanted 16.9k and I was able to negotiate down to 15.8k.

So far I've changed the oil, replaced air filter, and installed front/rear floor mats since it was just bare carpet. Shocks are basically done for but I have new ones coming tomorrow hopefully.

Tonight I need to go to Wally World and get new wiper blades and a cabin filter.

    Sr5 = Standard Shocks
    TRD Sport = Bilstein Shocks
TRD Off-Road = Bilstien Shocks + Progressive Springs + Locking Differential.

All TRD Off-Road and Sport models are also SR5 Tacomas.

Not all SR5 Tacomas have either TRD package.

The Sport is more of an appearance package with the fake hood scoop and color matched rear bumper on it.

Off Road has the real off-road goodies.

But is there a difference in the v6? A mechanic told me the sr5 v6 wasn't as good as the v6 in the trd and to stay away from them. Yes I'm the one who totalled out my baby girl. Miss her badly...

As far as I know, the engine has the exact same specs. I've read that the TRD Off Road and Sport have a slightly higher idle speed than the 4.0 in other Tacomas, but I can't confirm that.

Only difference I know is if it is equipped with factory tow package.
If so, it should have a factory oil cooler.
Other wise I don't known of any other difference?

The 4.0 liter V6 was almost unchanged from 2005-2015 in the Tacoma. There were indeed some tweaks such as a redesigned head gasket from late 2006 onward.

The performance was always rated at a max output of 236 hp and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. Displacement never changed. Variable valve timing on the intake valves was always part of the design.

I believe there are emissions component differences over the years, but no diff between SR5 and TRD as far as the engine goes.

You found all that for $700!

    Great job, my man...

    Jk

Seriously great advice. Start with the required features and work from there.
