Is there any reason that I couldn't/shouldn't cut the Exhaust right behind the Axle?

Sounds good, OP! I'm interested as well. I'd kind of like to finish it with a turndown instead of a sawed off piece of exhaust...

OP that looks good now I have to check to see what the inspection issues would be here.

If you want to cut it off behind the axle to where it will just blow the exhaust toward the ground then just do it.You may possibly smell a little exhaust in your truck in backed up traffic but I doubt it.There are thousands of Hotrods like Mustangs running turndowns dumped right out of the mufflers before the rear axle so it wont hurt your truck..

PA inspection won't pass this mod. (I am a state inspection mechanic) However, if you reattach it for inspection and it doesn't leak, you're golden.

I don't know the exact quote but the rule for exhaust is that it must exit to the side or rear of vehicle behind occupyable area, and not leak. So for example, somewhere around the bed.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
where that dumps is after the cab (aka occupyable area), so what's the issue?

Must exit body to the side or rear of the vehicle though at any point. So you can have it exit under bedside in front of rear tire, behind tire, or under bumper

incorrect. there are some dead guys in Montana who would argue against your statement. if they could.

co is going to spread horizontally quite a bit before it will rise higher than the bottom of truck. it won't just find a crack
and all rise up it. it is a mere 3% lighter than air, it is therefore almost neutral density.
and a lot is coming out that exhaust. it will pile up and spread far outwards as well as upwards.

think of it as: it will eventually float, not immediately float
(of course when hot, much faster float, but exhaust cools very rapidly)

it is dangerous to sit idling in a quiet spot even if the exhaust stuck a foot out the side of the truck,

if there is no breeze, shit can and will happen

Not trying to be argumentative but by that line of thinking... everyone that sits in traffic in a L.A. traffic jam should be dead.

The simple fact of the matter is I'm not going to be sitting for long periods of time in my truck with it idling. If I stop somewhere and I am going to be longer than 30 secs or so I turn the truck off. If I'm sitting in traffic, quite honestly I would be more worried about the guy's exhaust right next to me aimed directly at my drivers side door then the 18" I cut off mine.

I'll put it another way... I'm not worried and the truck looks much better without it ;)

^^ I wasn't saying cutting exhaust was good or bad.
In traffic you have a lot of convection currents even on zero breeze days....no one dies on the highway
from CO in traffic with a undamaged unblocked exhaust because there is still
enough air currents to mix in enough air with the co

I was speaking for the characteristics of carbon monoxide, in dead air it creeps
outward more than upward, at least more than one might normally expect

^^ This. There's also law's in some states that it has to exit to the side of a vehicle for this reason

I was offloading and smashed my exhaust pretty bad on a rock. It bent the pipe up into the fender.

So I just cut the pipe behind the axle where the last hanger will still support the exhaust. It's been like that for several years now and I haven't died from CO poisoning.

    Yes, Last Chance canyon

Exhaust could still flow, but it was a little restricted.

Mine passed twice. Once at a mom and pop and once at the dealer. Although the dealer did try to give me a hard time about it. I remember reading that it must exit in it's stock location or anywhere after the passanger compartment.

I'm sure you don't want everyone in SC. Especially not all of the fruits and nuts from CA. (I spent some time living in Rock Hill and not everyone there is accepting)

I have passed 2 CA smog checks without a problem with my cut exhaust.

i have it on my 08 tacoma and love it! and you dont really smell it unless you are outside the truck when sitting in traffic. i have a 3in turn down as well. Magnaflow Pro Series exhaust is the way i would go if you want ot do that! but i also have straight pipes too lol
