I got tired of searching for a MT 3rd gen. I ended up ordering mine specifically because It was the only way to get it, I was rather miffed that I couldn't get a TRD OF with a MT.

16 and 17 didn't have the adaptive cruise, could be a draw for some.

But otherwise I agree with most of the other stuff posted here. Lately it's shenanigans, but even in general a used tacoma isn't worth it until you get to the 10k range.

Brake pads, tires, fluids, etc all these things wear, plus financing, etc. If you are buying cash, maybe used makes more sense depending on your certified used deal and your cost, if you cannot afford new cash. But realistically they're so close, just get it new.

Will be an interesting next few years to see how all the shut downs and supply chain issues level out. I can tell you in aerospace we're already rewriting the textbooks for SCM (supply chain management) - instead of just a dual source, we need to have a dual source on a different continent, etc.

You mean one of the continents that didn't allow Covid nannies to shut everything down and keep it all locked due to laziness disguised as safety?! Sounds smart to me.

I figure I saved about $3,500 buying a used 2019 with only 4,700 miles on the odometer versus going new. Not a huge savings, but not chump change either, and still basically a new truck with plenty of warranty left on the clock. And the vehicle came with all the OEM factory add-ons that I wanted. I would have run out and bought, which would have added up quick. But yeah, the delta between new and late model used is definitely pretty slim!

I was told my new 2021 MT TRD OR DCSB in army green was built yesterday. in 4-5 weeks it will be here.
I can buy wholesale and used prices still make no sense.

Felt guilty buying new so checked out the used market in 20. Got over the guilt and bought new. Used wasn't worth it

To each their own, and 4700 miles is basically new to me.... Depending on the deal I would take a 1-2 yo vehicle with that mileage at the usual discount. The comparison makes more sense when you look at off lease or trade-in vehicles that are 2-3 years old with 30-50k miles on them.

Dealer gave me $30k for my early model '16 Sport with 55k on it. I couldn't believe it.

They listed it for $36k on their site and it was gone within a week. I think I paid $39k out the door for it in 2016. Good for me, not good for people shopping used Tacomas. Just buy the new one lol

Much the same here in my part of western Canada. High resale for used Tacoma’s. Many trading in on new Tacoma’s leaving dealers with little to no inventory at the moment.

Some dealers would have 3 used ones but no new ones. Maybe folks were upgrading their 2-3 year old Tacomas for whatever new one was on the lot leaving used ones while new inventory is lagging behind. A vicious cycle for anyone wanting a decent deal on a good quality used one.

Hopefully things will balance back out once the pandemic is over.

About 6 years ago a used car dealer I know told me Tacoma’s were the only vehicle to buy new, as they hold their value. Looking for my current truck I thought I found it twice, but those both sold by the time I got a hold of the dealers... eventually I got mine with a deposit, built on sept 30.

How do you like it? Dealer near me has "new" 2020 SVs that are priced much lower than new Tacoma's. The main thing that gives me hesitation is that 2020 is the first model year for Nissan's brand new drivetrain in the Frontier. On the surface a 310 hp V6 is pretty nice, but an aluminum block and 9 speed transmission seems less than reliable to me. But $28k for a new truck with towing package and modern interior is hard to ignore, plus a few of them aren't bad looking.

I was in the market for a '16 or '17 4cyl manual last spring, could not find one less than the NEW MSRP they sold for 4 years earlier. Ended up with a trd offroad with a manual for not much more new...Ridiculous actually.

More to be able to 'give' you another few $K on your clapped out trade in.

Or to be able to lower the price so the buyer thinks they are an awesome negotiator.

Or to hook that one buyer at full freight who wants that exact vehicle. And didn't pass HS economics (if that's even a thing anymore)

As far as those nissan's i know some friends that have them and have had them. Not a terribly bad truck. Their just not worth as much as the toyotas when it comes time to upgrade.
I've checked them out...don't know how the new frontier will be but past models seemed built cheap in many areas when compared to a similar trim toyota....then again you get what you pay for.

This was my situation as well. Started out looking at 1st gens, but my 4R had 285k on it and my wife wanted something lower mileage - under 100k. Finding a clean 1st gen under 100k, I was looking at over 10 grand for a 20 year old truck. Moved on to looking at 2nd gen, but found that for the price of a clean gen 2, I could get a used 3rd gen for a couple thousand more.

Then I test drove a 2019 at a local Subie dealer. They were asking something like $38k, for a vehicle with 30k miles on it. At that point I started looking at pricing a new one and found that with the options I wanted, I'd be at about the same spot, which included some considerable upgrades like LEDs, the power adjustable driver's seat, and really the only thing I missed out on was the dynamic navigation (but gained apple car play, so while I find the dynamic nav neat, I'd still probably prefer car play nav options if I actually need it). I negotiated a deal with the Toyota dealership, took that to Subaru and told them my bottom line was $32 out the door.

End of the day, I got a 2021 with 1 mile on the odometer, power driver's seat, LED headlights, apple car play, a full warranty, 48 months/48k miles of Toyota care, and better financing, in the color I wanted while spending less than if I had purchased a 2 year older vehicle with two owners, not knowing their driving or maintenance habits, no more Toyota care, almost depleted warranty. And when I drove by yesterday, the Subie dealer still had the Taco I looked at. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wasn't looking real hard but would occasionally look at used over the last year or so and found what others are saying, that I could buy new for close to used but may not have been comparing apples to apples because of the different trim levels.

I got an email a month ago from AAA about their car buying service so just for the heckuva it I put in 2021 Tacoma nad within 30 minutes had an offer at $500 over invoice for an SR. Less than 24 hours later I drove it off the lot. First new car I've owned in a long time and may be my last since I turn 60 this year....
