I am not a 'car guy' when it comes to the mechanical side of things. Thus, my question may seem to many as a 'are you actually asking this?', yet - i shall ask anyway lol.

I read the manual. It says nothing about speed restrictions for 4H and 4L use, as in you should use H for speeds of X-Z and L for A-C.

When i have it in 4H, for just normal driving in snow on the highway, everything is fine...but if i pull off the highway and into say, a gas station...at low speeds...the truck lurches and stalls?

So, normal? I think it is silly to turn off 4x4 in parking lots...especially if they are covered in snow. Manual says 4L is for towing and going up hills with weight...soo....??

Don't use 4wd on pavement period. Don't use 4L for towing either. What manual are you reading ? There are speed restrictions in 4L..

Dude...did you even read my post? lol

When driving in the snow / ice i use 4H. When i pull into a parking lot (again, still covered in snow / ice) my truck lurches and stalls while in 4H. Is this normal?

It's not that you shouldn't use 4 wheel drive on pavement, you just shouldn't use it when turning. Basically, if its snowy and slippery out you can use it on the road but if you are turning into a parking lot or gas station or what ever turn it off first.

No offense to anybody but I wouldn't take snow driving advice from anybody south of the mason Dixon line.

Ah...ok...it was while pulling into a parking stall the several times it happened - that must be it! Thanks

When it stalls, are you turning with the steering wheel turned quite a bit?

More than likely the torque converter stalling the engine to prevent damage.

It shouldn't stall I don't think. My Tacoma is my first 4WD so i've learned a bit here and there. It will bind the drive line and feel like the brakes are on when you turn sharply in 4WD but I don't think it should stall. Doesn't sound right.

Well now i know a little more about it. GF's Tahoe has 2W, 4H, 4L and AWD - she normally uses the AWD option, which doesn't experience this same issue.

Thanks for the info, ill be sure to use this shit properly from now on :)

When you crank the wheel over as far as it will go, there will be more resistance than in 2wd.

I'm always amazed by how many people buy very expensive machines and endanger them through ignorance.

If you don't know how your 4WD system works, you need to refrain from using it until you do.

Different wheels on vehicles (front/rear/left/right) turn at different speeds depending on which maneuver is being performed. When in 4x4, the front and rear wheels are powered at the exact same RPM by the engine/tranny and there is no center differential to allow for difference. Thus, if you have traction (LIKE A PARKING SPACE) the wheels will be fighting the driveline. At best, you get stalling and lurching. At worst, you break very expensive truck parts.

Read these two links and stay away from your truck until you understand them:
