Is this a axle seal leak?

I just noticed today that there was oil splatter on my diver's side rear wheel well. Once I climbed under the truck there appeared to be oil leaking from the rear of the brake. It's not brake fluid so I assume it's the rear axle seal. I have a appointment at the dealership in two weeks. Since this is a 2017 double cab off road with 4K miles it better be covered under warranty.

I appreciate it. I'm surprised this has failed with only 4K miles. I'm hoping it doesn't turn into a battle with the dealership for them to cover it. It's going in for the 5K mile service, transmission TSB, and howl.

I was reading a different post regarding the howl... what the OP discovered is that there are holes built into the bottom of the lower Front A-arms and at a certain speed it howls, just like blowing over the top of a bottle of Coca-Cola. I hope that that is the howl and not a bad bearing due to oil leakage.

I have seen the posts your referencing and the TSB that addresses it. I thought it was a diff howl but the holes in the lower control arm make sense. Shifting from park to drive or reverse to drive has some serious lag and first to second seems to jump a bit.

Mine was howling and as soon as I put electrical tape over the holes, top and bottom, the howling went away. So I'd try that first

I don't see why they wouldn't cover it

    Is the truck stock?

The leak could be caused by a bad axle bearing. The bearing goes bad and the room for movement takes out the seal. The howl could be the bearing..

I would put some tape over the holes in the control arm like the dude said and then if you still got a howl..

The dealership fixed the axle seal, a blown shock (weird), and did the transmission TSB. They said they couldn't replicate the howl. It was all covered under warranty but it took 12 days to get it in to service.

When my axel seals went I had to replace rear brake shoes as well, hopefully Toyota dealer didn't cheap out and re use your saturated shoes.

My seal leak was caused by diff breather being clogged, but yours is basically new so shouldn't be clogged, something to think about in the future however.

My 2012 ram had it done under warranty so I assume the great Toyota corporation would do the same

All work was done for no charge under warranty. That's a good point about a clogged diff breather. I remember seeing a mod for that. I'm fairly certain the brake pads were changed as well. I don't have the paperwork in front of me since I'm over seas right now.
