Just a side note: Be sure to check the brake line, in the photo it looks very stressed, maybe some signs of cracking.

Good news. Just a ball joint popped out. $460 to get it fixed and aligned. That's cheap when labor is $120 an hour.

OP I would highly recommend you replace both upper and lower ball joint on both sides with only OEM parts.

If one failed (you were very lucky) the others are not far behind.

Rusty frames and ball joints are commen 1st Gen weaknesses.

When the mechanic get it on the ground and align it, then they will quote a price to replace the other side. Thanks again for all the help

I hope, at a minimum, that's both LBJs.

After what just happened you can rest assured that the other side is doomed as well.

Get it replaced, don't take the risk of an accident.

yeah $460 if that's for both, including labor, then they are definitely the cheaper aftermarket variety. I would keep a close eye on them, the aftermarket ones suffer from the same ability to fail and even more so without the same quality as oem.

If you take it to a trusted place for regular maintenance, have them check those ball joints each time. If there's any visible play to the ball joint it should be replaced. The FSM specifies a certain amount of allowable play to the joint, but it's so small it isn't something you can visibly account for.
