:edit I am 90%sure my timing cover is leaking and I need your opinion on my options
    1. let it leak and monitor it
    2. pay they 1000-1500 to have it fixed
Remember the truck is almost 10 years old and probably only worth about 9-12 grand

It looks like a casting line, just like the one below it. The line looks too straight to be a crack anyway.

I'd say is a leak at the gasket.

It looks like a mark made during the casting process. It matches the one below it.

I've done a mod or two
Just a casting mark, I think your leak is coming from either the timing cover or the valve cover.

Just leave it be and consider it rust prevention. I've had mine for 8 years with no real issues except and noisy drive belt. Just change your belt every year. Belt is like 50 bucks, timing chain cover fix cost like 1500.

does yours leak in the same spot? It looks like its right under the alternator mount. I can wedge my hand through the belt and feel a bunch of goo in there.

Mine is a 2.7 also I see it being a problem on the v6

Ok help me out guys look at the last picture I posted that is looking from the back to the front that is the rusty header out of cylinder one. Notice where the leak is starting that that is where the timing cover bolts into what I believe is the head? Does that part look like a crack hence causing the bolt to not keep the correct torque spec causing a leak?

Just a shot in the dark. it looks like it could be a crack. If it is preventing the bolt from tightening do to the threads slipping would it be possible to install a longer bolt with a nut and flat washer to draw it up tight?

Ok look at this this is a google image of a 2trfe head circled is the hole i circled in the last image. Looks like a casting mark as well. Maybe I can try and re torque that bolt would anybody know the ft lbs? Im hoping I can just re torque it and call it a day. The image below the head is the hole that the bolt goes through into the head. Sory for the flip flop images Its hard to find easy to look at ones on google.

The dealershit tried unsuccessfully 3 times to reseal timing cover on my 05 2.7 under drivetrain warranty before replacing the head gasket to make it stop. They also left the crank pulley bolt hand tight so that was a fucked up surprise down the road a bit when it starting making a sound like a knocking rod with it loose on the keyway. Luckily I found it before bolt fell out. The service manager got to hear me sing the praises of their "work" to a packed house in the service area after that. Keep an eye on all the brackets and wiring loom clips they will leave undone or broken too. All kinds of monkey nut BS under there from them prankin around trying to fix shit but just making things worse. Good luck. Might be better off like the one dude said by just driving it as is checking oil level and replacing the belt every year.

Drench root area with brake clean. Use Mr. Gasket 1 Minute gasket maker over top of area. Rub in with finger. Let set for about 30 minutes. Should be good. Easiest temp fix.
