I only have this picture but am replacing the rear u joint as it is bad. Have not done proper maintenance and greased like they should have been. Since am doing one figure get them all done right. It's an 03 pre runner TRD with 162,000 miles. Also doing carrier bearing and front strut assemblies.

That was my and my mechanics thought but now with this being a double cardon joint I was reading earlier about trouble finding the correct u joints for it vs just replacing the drive shaft.

They are usually rebuild able, just find a reputable drive train/drive line shop in your area.
I recommend Six States distributors if you have one.

Kind of confusing questions but yes oreilly or auto zone will cary the u joints, you may need to order the carrier bearing. Drop the whole(two piece) shaft and dismantle and replace everything, then reinstall. There are plenty of videos online.

You may be the first Debbie to attempt this.

I'd just pull the whole shaft and take it to a drive line shop. You buy the centre bearing (aka hangar) at a dealer or online. Then just install.
This assuming you don't have the kit to replace the U- joints yourself.

Are you getting vibrations? I wouldn't necessarily add to it unless you're having problems.
Replace the u joints and grease that baby, see how she acts.
But if he knows a reputable shop they should be able to rebuild and balance the whole shebang for $250 or less plus whatever he's gotta have for removing it and running it over there.

Yes still having considerable vibrations. We have don upper control arms and new ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends with new boots, stabilizer links. I had new tires mounted, balanced and aligned. Drove it off and drove it right back. Had to wait to get it back in when a different tech was there and discovered the u joint and strut issues

Any decent mechanic can replace those u-joints inside an hour. Pull the whole shaft and do it.

Oops...I see you have good guidance already

They can be a pain to replace for anyone, some things are definitely easier left with someone with the proper tools, but in any case it's great you are familiarizing yourself with parts on your truck.

P.s. my mom's name is debbie and I wish she had an idea what a driveshaft was let alone a u joint or carrier bearing.

They have good reviews, and from the pics looks like people trust him to build shafts for tough rigs.
I'd call ask for a quote to rebuild the entire shaft and if not to out of line just take the truck to him.

The Cardan joint will be a big problem to get out. Toyota didn’t make it an item that was to be replaced. People tend to miss the zerk grease fitting for this joint because it’s kinda hidden.
It can be busted out but can also be a problem to get it balanced correctly.
If you haven’t taken care of the driveshaft the slip joint can be a problem later too.

I got a completely new driveshaft with spicer parts and any single part can be replaced.
    from this link below.
This took care of all the joints including the slip joint issue I had originally.

It took 30 minutes for me to replace it.
