Too much money, I’d wait for something less modded, 6” lift is not right for these trucks

Where you live is gonna play a big factor in how much it’s worth. In hawaii that would be a fair price, in the boonies that’s way too expensive.

Seriously, you are all my BFFs. He has a little Mazda sedan that is great on mileage and reliable, but not winter driving friendly and he needs something AWD. I think he needs a Crosstrek which can be had in his price range with low mileage. Saving this thread to show him.

Crosstrek AWD with allseason tires is a significantly better winter vehicle than a Tacoma on mudders. The underbody will probably hold up better to winter salt too.

    1. KBB means nothing for a Toyota.
    2. The odometer is probably under or WAAAYYY under if it has had that 6” lift and 35’s on it for many years.

$22.5k? It's nearly 20 years old. No thanks!

Beyond that I had an '06 and it wasn't all that great. Lots of early model run issues.

Several revisions were made in '07:
-Engine mount area of the frame was strengthened
-Exhaust manifolds went from "log" to "header"
    -Traction control was added
    -Tail gate was strengthened
    -Numerous TSBs were addressed

Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

it’s a nice looking truck but that lift can be a serious headache down the road and cannot be easily removed since the frame has been cut.

I would recommend searching on Kelley Blue book, auto trader, and car finder for the truck he is looking for. You can specify color, year, etc. found both my trucks that way.

This, plus even if you're in a warm state you don't necessarily know without digging deeper the history. My friend's 2006 lived in MA most of its life until a few years ago when she moved to NC. Frame rotted out on her. She was able to get a reframe but it was an uphill battle.

Look at the Rav4 as well. My wife had an 05 for many years and has a 14 now. Both were fantastic in awful weather. MA one year got about 150 or so inches of snow...at least once a week it seemed to dump a foot or more. Not once did she have problems.

I was trying to get $8k for my 05 with 200k, 4x4 4.0 double cab with zero rust and new frame. Just failed clear coat on the hood and roof.

I don’t know how people will charge more than market value(kbb)

How old is your son? Does he have a job that he can afford the truck payments, Insurance, and to pay you back your 4K? There's a big $$$ difference between asking price of 22k and Blue book of 15K. Modifications add another 5k? Is this his first vehicle? My first vehicle was an Opal station wagon.

I'm definitely in the wrong forum to be supporting the Crosstrek suggestion, but I like that idea for this specific situation. I've had a few Subarus and they are great. They check most of the boxes of a good car buying decision, except for the part where you're seen driving a Subaru... I sacrificed gas mileage, initial lower cost of purchase, better technology, smoother ride and a few other things, but ultimately I belong in a Tacoma. At least the Subarus I had were American made too. Indiana. Who knew... USA! USA!

OP, DO NOT BUY THAT TRUCK! Way too much money, especially for that year. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, frame rot and head gasket issues await…

Doubt frame rot will be an issue with a Cali truck

and head gaskets are cheap and easy to do. My 05 hasn’t needed head gaskets (I know I know) and has 218k hard miles on it.
That truck is too much money though and I agree.

buy your kid a Kia Sephia or some cheap crap like that.

He is just turning 19 this week and has a Mazda M3 sedan that is being passed down to his brother and we had a budget of 12k to get something AWD in exchange. He has another 6k saved to kick in. Worked a full time and part time job this summer. Will work part time at school but no car means an on campus job, which is fine too.

I am so grateful for all the experience shared here. I had no idea Tacoma’s had so many nuances. I just thought they were great trucks that ran forever. My dad has a 2005 tundra that is still in incredible shape.

Looking at the question simply as, is the value of the truck in comparison to the KBB?. I would say it’s just slightly overpriced while keeping the mods in consideration. However, the cost of vehicles has just gone up, we have to deal with that. Assuming everything was maintained and the rest of the truck looks as good as it does in the picture, I wouldn’t hesitate to drop 20K on it.

Tacomas do run forever and hold their value more than most. Mine is a 2015 DC TRD Sport. I have received offers from random strangers, have had notes left on my truck, and all the way through last year, have received requests from the dealer to buy my truck back at 29k (I paid 34k new). From my experience and watching my friends and family chew through vehicles because issues happen, I always feel that I made the right choice.

The exceeding the budget part isn’t really for me or anyone to comment on, that’s your personal situation. So just keeping my opinion based on ask vs. value.

Wish you and the son good luck on the endeavor. Keep us posted on your choice!

Yeah absolutely spot on with the odometer ! I run 34’s & have to correct for error when calculating for mpg’s maintenance intervals etc… when my speedo says 60 mph ,gps says im going 66mph…..
