The point that everyone is trying to make is leasing the truck is a bad choice, regardless of whether you're driving one or one hundred times a month. You say you want to purchase a new car in three years. That's great. However, you'll still have to put a couple thousand down on another lease and continue to pay the monthly payment. The dollars and cents don't add up with the Tacoma. Maybe it is a smart choice for certain vehicles, but not the Tacoma. If you can't afford the $500/mo that's a little different. But if your only reason to lease is because you don't drive that much, it doesn't make sense. Buy it. Drive it for three years. If you decide you want to get into another ride after the three years, take the thousands in equity you'll have and go for it.

Just mentioned the renting as an option. With your down payment (2K) and monthly payments ($366) for 36 months. Your paying just over $15,000.00 to use a truck for 36 weeks. Then give it back to the dealer with nothing to gain. The dear would love for you to do this. They'll sell it for a 10K profit, plus what they made off of your down stroke/payments.

To answer your question, No doesn't sound like a good deal at all.

Toyota will make so much money off of you if you lease that truck. Leasing a Tacoma is just not financially smart, these trucks are practically investments they hold their value so well....especially in your case since you'll have hardly any miles on it. In 2016 you could make a killing when you sell the Tacoma.

I will look further into financing one, I just didn't want to blow the entire 5k on a down payment. I have a 55 fairlane that's getting a 4 link suspension and bagged and I need the money elsewhere. My wife and I just purchased an RV so that is why the monthly payment is a big concern of mine. Plus with the 2014 around the corner, you'd think there would be more incentives but there dont seem to be in the Los Angeles area.. If I could buy the truck for 432 monthly then yes I sure would but I dont know how much of a possibility that is so thats why leasing seemed an appropriate route.

You won't see any major incentives on the Tacoma.

Same as the 2013. No changes to the line for this year other than perhaps some options packages.

Go with an SR5 to get the payments down. And remember if you keep it 5 years, you won't even have a car payment anymore!

I think this is an option however, do the rear ends on the TRD come with limited slip or how do the diffs differ? Because I do plan on lifting (mild) and wheels and tires as well..

The SR5 and the TRD Sport have the same rear ends, i believe. SR5 definitely is LSD. The TRD Off-road comes with a different one that has a locker on it.

You can easily lift an SR5, usually it's the preferred model to lift because you're not wasting money on an upgraded factory suspension that you plan to replace anyway.

Ok so I found the exact same model I want (color too) 2012 with 12k on it for 28,350 and thats toyota certified.. I am curious if I can negotiate them down to 26k but you guys all say these trucks hold their value so how likely am I to get it for 26k? Or maybe I can push harder???

So the 2013 new truck is being sold for $28,330.00 but the 2012 with 12k is being advertised at $28,350?

Buying the truck for $432 monthly is possible, but you'd be pay it off for 72 months at 2.5% interest. ;)

Leasing makes sense for hedging your risk against the following two scenarios:

    1. Trucks turns out to be a lemon. Rare for Tacomas but possible.
    2. Truck is involved in some catastrophic collision, but insurance doesn't total it. Truck is repaired but doesn't drive the same.

If you buy the truck out at end of lease, you don't lose any money compared to financing. That's in fact what I did.

if you can get it for $26,000 you're kind of the man and will be getting a great deal. give it a shot.

in Seattle, used Tacomas sell for more than new because of the $$ the dealership has to put into the truck to certify it. i picked up my new '12 for $30,350 before tax/title and they wanted $31+ for the same truck with a few thousand miles.

these trucks hold value like a mofo, hence everyone in this thread was giving you a hard time about leasing. so...if you can get it for $26,000

edit: i kind of assumed we're talking TRD 4x4 so if if we're not, excuse my post.

No its a pre runner. Its hard to find that many 4x4's out here. Just not as common even though we live by the desert.

Yeah I have the option to buy after but I know me, and Im pretty sure I will want something newer or my needs may change by then.. I go through cars like women go through shoes.

There must be a way to evaluate this using math instead of emotion. I'm not good with math, but maybe this will get my idea started. I'm going to use the final cost of the Tacoma you want as $30,000. The cost of leasing is the down payment ($2,000.00) plus the monthly note of $366 x 36months (= $13,176). for a total 3 year expense of $15,176. That's pretty easy. It's a little harder to figure 3 year cost of buying. Same down payment of $2,000. plus $466 x 36months (=$16,776.) Sub Total =$18,776 Now the cost/gain of selling it in 3 years? If somebody smarter than me can figure cost/gain of selling, then you have the difference of buying vs. leasing.

    Does this help?

PS - I want a 4x4 Tacoma with as many features as possible, but a new one ($35k-40k) is too much for me. So I'm looking at used ones and the resale value is so freakin' high that it has to be at least five yrs old with close to 100,000 miles to get into the low $20k's and I will have to search the whole USA & have to ship it to New Orleans (cause there aren't many around here). The local dealer suggested leasing & I'm thinking about it too.
On second thought, I like the idea of having it payed off with NO NOTE & I may want to do a few custom things to it. I know it's a vehicle that will last the rest of my life if I keep the oil clean. Oh well?!?
