Is this a good plan to upgrade wheels then tires?

I traded in my Prerunner for a 4x4. The new-to-me Tacoma has aftermarket wheels which I don't really like. I think they're MB Motorsports or something. They're chrome and I want to go with black. The tires on the wheels have some life left in them. Cooper Discoverer 265/70R16.

Here's what I want to do. Buy XD Addict 16x9 -12 offset wheels in black. Switch the tires on to these wheels and sell other wheels on craigslist. Will going with a 16 inch wheel limit my choice of tires in the future? Will there be anything that I regret about getting 16's? Later on, I will upgrade tires once the tread on these are gone.

BTW, the truck has a Toytec 3" lift on it. It's a DCLB V6 SR5.

    2005TacomaSide.jpg

Am I being super picky by wanting to replace these wheels with black XD Addicts?

It's your truck, you should do what you want. Sticking with 16" will limit your choices later on, seems like there are a lot more choices in the 17" range, but that is not to say there are not good tires out there in the 16" size. if you are wanting to go bigger it may limit your choices. I prefer the ride and look of the bigger wheels personally. Bottom line is figure out what size and type of tire you want and look to see if it comes in a 16" wheel size.

    Nice looking truck!!!

You won't be able to get 35s but there are 33s that fit a 16" rim.

Your truck, your choice. I went from 16" to 17" and haven't regretted it. It is personally your decision and what you believe is best.

I didnt realize you could actually switch out the stock 16" TRD OR wheels for 17" wheels, for some reason I thought you had to stick with 16". You learn something new everyday!

I like your taste! I've got those exact wheels and love them. I'm a big fan of small wheels with lots of rubber. I don't think you will have problems finding a good tire for a 16" wheel.

I was inspired to stick with 16's based on a truck which is a lot like vandaltaco's rig which I think is riding on duratrac 285/75R16 tires. Of course, my current tires won't look nearly that nice.

But what I'm hearing is that the main down side to 16" rims is that I won't find 35" tires. But I can find those on 17" rims.

Do 17's handle better? The looks can be better. Or is the benefit to you that you get a wider range of tires in R17?

for me it was the looks as well as the tires, I wanted Nitto Trail Grapplers and could get them in the 285 65 18 size that I wanted. I had 17"s stock though.

Tires for 16s are a bit cheaper too... I've never heard that there are more tires for 17s than 16s, and I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless you have some weird tires in mind. Look around at the sizes and see what's available I guess.

Larger wheels in general perform better in the street, smaller wheels are generally more ideal for off-road conditions.

The reason I went from a 16" to a 17" was mainly for a little more ride height than stock. I like the looks of the 17" more than the 16", but performance wise there really isn't that much of a difference on-road. Now for off-road purposes, people tend to go towards the 16" wheel for its benefits. If you take your rig off-road more than on-road, I'd suggest the 16" wheel. Otherwise, the 17" will suite your needs. I definitely wouldn't do anything above an 18", even 18's look too big in my opinion.

I have 16's on my Prerunner (stock) , if I went to 17's does it require any changes to the computer?

Not that I am aware of. My speedometer may be off by 1-2mph, but that's created by the different sized tire. If you bump the wheel size up to 17" and keep a similar spec tire, you'll be okay.

I just threw the 265/75/16 Duratracs on my stock TRD off road wheels, and I love the way it turned out.

If you ever want to upgrade to bigger brakes, you need 17" or bigger.

I like that. Any fitment issues / rubbing? Any change in fuel economy? Any noticeable loss in power?

Nope, no rubbing at all. I searched for awhile seeing what the largest I could put on without having to trim or without rubbing. I had Duratracs on my old tahoe and loved them. They are great tires.

A lot better than the shitty Rugged Trails that come stock on 2014 Tacos. Very happy with these.
