Ive noticed this since i first had the truck, ive always thought it was normal but now im starting to doubt that. It cant be knocking/pinging, is it? The noise that concerns me is that "ticking" noise you can hear at about 0:28~

I just filled up with Shell's regular (89 octane), but this is the first time doing it, and before today, ive always been using 87. So ill drive around more and see if anything changes.

In my opinion, my stupid camera makes it sound like a diesel...

I didnt hear any knocking or pinging, sounded normal to me, although with your camera it was really quite difficult to hear. Are you having poor performance? How is throttle response? How are your mpg?

Sounds normal. Our 4.0L isn't a good sounding engine IMHO. I often have people asking about the tick and rough sound. Its even more audible when parked near a building (drive thru) or driving adjacent to a tall building or wall.

The Tacoma is my first truck and my first Toyota. The engine doesn't sound good, but if it lasts a very long time I'll be happy.

OP: Truck sounds fine. Same as mine.

hey, if you think thats bad go up a small hill or accelerate while getting on the highway. I just ordered some doug thorley headers to see if that helps. Loudest taco engine I've ever heard. Sadley driving a 2010 dbl cab 4x4. Toyota's starting to loose its edge.

Im pretty sure that that noise at 28 seconds is you moving the camera. Seeing as the screen moved and you walked around the car just before that.

Definitely the camera mic's limited freq. range makes it sound worse.

Find a mid 90's Isuzu Rodeo or Trooper with the 3.2L single cam v6 and you'll appreciate how quiet sounding this one is! But even clacking as they tended to that motor isn't 'bad', just noisy. Still runs great, was just a quirk of the lifters that they tended to be noisy.

I had a "ticking" in my 97 Taco for probably 5 years! Started as soon as some dude talked me into synthetic oil....I changed right back to real oil and it never went away. The motor was strong as ever tho at the end of 7 years....my 05 has been ok so far....oh....turning the radio up helped a great deal ;)

Lol alrighty ill have a look.

Thanks! I can tow 900000000000lbs now buhahah :D

yeeeeah, dad has a camry and we have an 04 sienna (god that thing has been all over the US) none of those make any noises like this lol. Oh and a thing about the sienna, toyotas are so damn reliable!, we had a 97 Dodge RAM van before that, it broke down before we could make it to the texas/Louisiana border, while our sienna has been from texas, west and up and down the west coast i saw so many overheated/broken down american cars in the arizona desert the temp needle never moved past normal operating temps!, then east and up and down the east coast, from NY we headed to canada. Boy did their border folk looked shocked to see texas plates :D

Yeah, its an old camera and has a shit microphone  hahahaha i havent seen an isuzu pickup since my childhood, that was the first truck my dad ever owned. no radio, no power anything, no abs, I4 stick, only cost him 7,000$ (of course this was back in like 1990)

waiiitt, i thought synthetic is good? LOL. that what ive been using on my truck on every oil change ive ever done.

Ever since I bought my truck I have heard the "Ticking" noise. I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it (although it's hard to beleive them most of the time). I found that using 91 gas helps a little but the sound is still there.
