Yeah, but compare his speed to mine... and I even had cruise control on. We have to trust that he drove it and not parked it. ;)

I typically get between 17.5-18.5 mpg in the city but I have to sometimes sit in traffic if the access gates are slow. I am not a lead foot which helps too. I am sure I will get over 20 mpg on a road trip unless I have a heavy load.

I can swing 18.5 if I am lucky. If you are driving 70 with any sort of incline or head wind, 15.5 doesn't seem unreasonable.

Most of my miles are in town and vary from a low of 17 up to 22 or so. It all depends on traffic, trains and if I sit through a few drive throughs and if it's winter or summer. In the summer, if I can just drive and make 50 % of the lights I'm in the low to mid 20's easily. It's been this way it seems like forever with the three Tacomas I've owned. I used to be concerned about mpg, but since it stays the same for the most part, I've quit worrying about it and just enjoy the ride. Even punch it a bit now and again just to hear the CAI and CatBack do their thing.

I think it can do better. Yes, I'm parked in the garage, I didn't want to get a ticket for using my phone. This is several miles off the freeway so I wasn't doing anything that would drive the mileage figure up. If anything it would go down. This figure came from a round trip that included surface street driving and and some freeway congestion. I typically drive 70ish and I usually downshift manually on grades. I don't have a big lift, I'm not running E rated 285's, and the truck isn't loaded with armor or a roof top tent. It doesn't seem unreasonable. I just want to enjoy my MPGs here - I'll get over it. I'm used to 75-100 dollar fill ups and 10 MPG.

I'm going to drive up to Mammoth Lakes in a couple of weeks, so I'll see what it does on a longer trip with (typically) little traffic slowing, but some significant grades to climb. I would like to get a tank of gas that doesn't have any ethanol and see if it makes a difference.

I didn't buy this truck as a MPG commuter, but after 20 years of 10 MPG full size rigs and my wife's JK which gets far below the EPA figure, I'm pretty happy it gets what it gets. Even if I drove with my foot in it all the time it would do better than my last truck. That truck couldn't break 16 on the highway if it were going downhill, with the engine off and a tailwind pushing it.

I did it while running 265/75/16 e rated BFG’s, a cabrak mounted drogue chute of a RTT, a high rear shell with a rack, 6 plates of Mobtown and CBI steel armor, steel sliders and a lift! :bananadance:

Ok, for reals... it was at the bottom of a 5-mile 6% grade, right after I did a partial fill up at the summit, fully loaded for a 10-day camping trip...so don’t feel so bad, I don’t care about my low mileage either, I care about FPM’s (Fun per Miles) instead!

I’m interested in the mileage figures because I’m trying to get a feel for my new truck. I don’t see it as a competition, a test of manhood nor do I doubt others numbers.

Obviously there are many variables but I can’t get mine to read out 20 mpg under any circumstances. I think it’s getting better as I accumulate some miles. I drove it today, after reading this thread and see that the tank average mpg had reset since I last drove the truck 3-4 days ago. I have over 1/2 tank of gas in the tank. I went out and took photos and think I’m seeing the full tank average (computer) again because it was around 14 when I parked it an hour ago.

    Anyone else experience this?

My computer number and my calculated mileage are not near the same or consistent numbers. The computer has been quite optimistic. I may well been missing something.

Don't trust the dash readout until you hand calculate a few tanks. Some vehicles are off quite a bit, and usually optimistic. Others are very accurate. My Honda is always 3-4 mpg optimistic. My F150 is close enough that I trust it. In the 63,000 miles I've put on it the dash readout has never been off by more than 1/2 mpg. And it is low as often as high. It is usually within .2-.3. My Tacoma is old enough that it doesn't have that feature.

And weird stuff can happen on partial tanks. I've recorded anywhere between 4 mpg up to nearly 40 mpg over 30-40 mile stretches due to terrain, load, and traffic. Even when you hand calculate a full tank you can see big differences for a variety of reasons. On some long road trips I've gotten as much as 23 mpg and as low as 16 mpg on interstate hwy's on the same day. The 23 mpg came on a long downhill run coming out of the Rockies headed east, the 16 mpg on the flat plains driving into a strong headwind. My Tacoma will be in the 19-20 mpg on the road. 16-17 in town.

The air pressure in the tires will make a HUGE difference. The numbers on the door jamb are for best ride. I get 2-3 mpg better by running about 5 PSI above that. Last November I drove from GA to CO to elk hunt. Once in CO I spent 5-6 days driving on forest service roads in deep snow and mud. I dropped down to about 32 PSI instead of the 38 I normally run. On the 1st tank on the way home my fuel mileage sucked. Then I remembered to air up. Once back to 38 PSI my fuel mileage went back to normal

15.5 with full armor, 33s, and some really hard acceleration every morning thanks to a short ramp onto the interstate followed by 10 miles of uphill.

I have a 2018 DCLB TRD OR 4x4 with sliders and a GFC camper, stock wheels and E rated AT/3 LT Cooper tires. I have a light foot and am getting about 17 MPG city and 18.5 MPG highway.
