It’s not the paint color. the textured bumper is distorting the reflection you would see if it were flat like the metal parts.

So are there Tacomas with either nontextured or sanded down bumper cover paint jobs? Because I've never seen a Tacoma with a textured bumper and paint just sprayed over that texture.

Great thread, guys. Today we learned:

    • Lots of people can confirm that the paint looks slightly weird on the front bumpers of lots of Tacomas, particularly ones that were built recently.
    • F*** that, OP’s truck definitely got smashed on the lot and repainted and it’s just a coincidence that the rest of the new Tacomas look the same.
    • A few among us assert that it is possible to paint plastic so well that it looks the same as adjacent metal parts. Whether they are industry insiders, professional painters, or just people who have seen literally any new car in the last 20 years… we’ll never know.
    10/10, I’m going to bed.

Thanks for all the replies gang. I didn't think this thread would get this much attention. Let me clarify the color on the truck I was looking at is not mismatched. It's also not orange peal. I used to do custom airbrushing and have been around a lot of body shops and with this bumper it looks like there is just a 'dusting' of clear sprayed on it. The fender guards look similar to the bumper but have more gloss to them. This looks like uneven clear or just a really thin layer of it. As I mention in my OP, they originally had a appearance protection package tacked on that I refused to pay for so it is possible there is a spray on bra on the bumper. I doubt the truck was hit on the lot, I looked all over for any kind of overspray and there wasn't any.

I never asked about what the appearance package was because originally they removed all the addon costs, even the step rails, window tint, all weather floor mats, etc. even though they were already on the truck. I couldn't get there that night so I went the next day and they tried to add some of the addon costs back so I walked. They said if the truck was still there on the 14th I could get it with all the adds dropped. I'm sure I won't need to worry about it since I doubt the truck will last another two weeks.

You'll know you've found the right truck when you see it. Go with your gut instinct. For me it's every time I see a black one. :facepalm:MGM's okay to I guess.

My truck has the same issue, 21 with white paint, late Oct build date. It looks like VERY thin paint over slightly textured plastic. It is not blatant but it is noticeable, I noticed it from inside the dealer when the salesman drove it up.

Mine was not repainted nor damaged at the dealer. Not saying I drove by the lot the day it was delivered or anything… lol. In all seriousness though I know the exact path the truck traveled from the moment it came off the shipping truck to the second I took the keys, it wasn’t hit and it wasn’t in the dealers lot for more then 12 hours

Yours definitely has more clear on the bumper. I have been browsing through the different color threads and noticed a lot of Taco's are similar to the one I am looking at. It seems hit or miss.

I noticed a few manufacturers doing thin, thin paint on bumpers. My last Ford Edge bumper would scratch thru to black raw plastic if you dropped a plastic gallon of milk on it. (That has nothing to do with this thread though)

It is smooth a glass with no texture, just lots of weird reflections going on in the corner of the garage.

Same shot as the OP in Post #1 just a little closer, passenger fender and bumper.

The paint doesn't bother me as much as the body lines. Someone or something hit that bumper and they did a shoddy repair job.

I imagine the answer is something like this.

Maybe it's just what the supplier is sending Toyota.

It’s plastic crap anyway. I think mine is like that too but I care less because I'm just eager to replace it with an actual bumper. I always wonder why it’s called bumper. It’s not a bumper. It’s actually a bumper cover. Flimsy no use plastic just for look.

My neighbor has a 2011 TRD Sport in MGM and I looked at it and it’s got the same thing going on. The bumper is just slightly darker than the rest of the truck. I’m pretty sure it’s never been repainted since he’s had it since new and never mentioned anything like that. Must just be a Tacoma thing.
