While driving in 2wd coming to a slow controlled stop, the front wheels lock up and skid on a snowy surface. There are no idiot lights such abs that flash. It is repeatable. It does not happen on dry pavement. Pretty unnerving and noisy when it happens. The rear wheels do not lock up only the front. I am going to run this by the tech I trust on Thursday. I recorded a video and will show him at that time. It would seem to be a potential spin problem when the front lock up and the rear doesn't. Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen.

    Thanks for your input.

whats noisy when they lock up? if it makes a noise, its the very loud abs activiting which is normal, its happening to all 4 wheels and is not locking up(since abs is activating)

There is a loud clicking coming from the front end. It is locking up as the front wheels only are not spinning and skidding on the surface. I have video that show that to be the case.

As you suggested I did try that by turning traction control off and had the same results.

you cannot shut off the abs by disabling traction control

the clicking is the abs pump cycling. the tires are not locked because abs is keeping them from locking. if they were locked youd have all kinds of warning lights and no clicking sounds

ABS is really noisy in all Toyota Trucks in my experience. It can't be disabled like Trac/VSC/ALSD etc.

They are antilock but on ice they can lock for a second at a time or so and still rotate. Basically brake modulation is what it sounds like to me.

Kind of an electronic grinding sound?

That is what I wanted to know whether this was inherit to the vehicle. I came from a 2015 2 door Jeep wrangler and never experienced this. I am not trying to bash the truck and have been driving in this type of weather for 48 years. Just seemed to be a bit unusual.

yes sort of an electronic grinding sound. I do consider lock up when wheels are not turning and skidding on surface. Rear wheels were spinning while front were not.

Post up the video of what you are experiencing. Little easier to see if its normal then saying it clicks and locks up.

I was hoping to post the video. The wife recorded in mp4 and as a message. I am having difficulty converting it to a format that can be posted here.

Back when I bought my 08 damn near every time I stepped on the brakes in wet weather it would engage the ABS, it ended up being those shitty Rugged Fail Tires. When I bought my 2015 I had them replace the tires before I even took delivery as I did not want to go thru that again. Hopefully the issue you are experiencing is due to something similar.

I have the stock Hankook tires. I have been looking at replacing them, but my cheapness won't let me until 25k miles. It is hard to justify the expense unless it becomes a real safety issue. I will probably go with the Duratrac when the time comes. It is unnerving, but not something I cannot live with.

if it helps, it is the most active traction control ive ever experienced in a vehicle and probably engaged abs in roughly 1000+vehicles (years in dealerships in snow) and the 16 tacoma takes the cake for quickest to interfere and loudest
