Is this sound the "taco tick" everyone is referring to?

It sounds like my engine has some clattering sound to it. I only really hear it on the passenger side of the engine. Do I have anything to worry about here, or am I just hearing the "taco tick" everyone is referring to?

Here's a video I uploaded of how my engine sounds:

I would say the truck is doing the self cleaning of the injectors. If that's the new "taco tick"

Why is it that I only hear it isolated to the passenger side? Any idea why that might be?

Mine makes the same noise. I suppose it's normal, I hope.

I'm glad to hear that y'all hear it as well. You can hear the sound very clearly in my video at about 2-5 seconds, then I walk around to the other side briefly and it's almost inaudible. Lately I've been noticing that the truck makes the sound a lot during idle. I hope that it is just the truck doing what it's supposed to do!

If anyone has any info on this I'd really like to know!

Idle it for a long time, 10+ minutes. If it doesn't go away after 10-15 minutes it isn't the self cleaning injectors. They don't clean themselves forever. And it should only clean during a hot idle I believe, so you shouldn't hear the cleaning sound when the engine is cold.

Thank you so much for this response! This will help me either figure out the problem or sleep at night knowing there isn't one. THANK YOU!

Wow that sounds louder than I thought it would be, it sounds like it has an exhaust leak

That's what I was thinking as well... It's very noticeable with the hood up.

Sounds like the lifter in the pump clacking around; it runs off a cam.

There's been a few high pressure pumps replaced; those made a chirpy sound though.
Let us know what they find, and good luck.

The 2016 Tacoma's 3.5L engine is equipped with both direct and port fuel injection system. The ticking sound is a result of the self-cleaning direct fuel injection systems activation and is a normal characteristic of normal system operation. No repair is necessary to remedy this condition. (I found this online because I was wondering about mine also!)

This is what Toyota claims is causing the tick noise. Can't say that I agree with this analysis as, as this forum will attest, the noise is only on the right side of the engine so, if its due to injector cleaning it would be on both sides of the engine. It is inconceivable to me that Toyota would bring a product to market with a noisy engine, especially the long awaited redesigned Taco with the new Atkinson Cycle engine. I'm not buying it...file this under unmitigated bullshit...TacomaTick 008.jpg

Well it's really easy to check. If the noise lasts longer than 10-15 minutes during a hot idle, it isnt the cleaning. Unfortunately you have to stand there for 10 minutes, but it's the simplest a test could be.
