Is this sound the "taco tick" everyone is referring to?

Kind of glad now I canceled my order back in November and bought the 4 cylinder. I saw a video after waiting a month with no word on my build. That video swayed me towards "Ole reliable." I may get the V6 in a year or 2 anyway. The ticking noise is not that bad. I could live with it.

Your not going to hear the injector noise. The noise is the high pressure pump. The injectors have a slit or something in the top of them so when it's in cleaning mode it blows the carbon off. I seen a video of how it works I'll see if I can find it

I'm still tying to find the video that gives the demonstration but in this video Toyota head truck engineer himself Mike Sweers, talks about how it work and the noise from the lines. I'll still search around for the other video

Mine has been making the same noise since day 1 leaving the dealership with only 2 miles on it.

Mine makes the "tick" noise but not that "metal clatter" noise. Sounds like a lifter hitting a valve cover or something. Very unsettling in my mind. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

That term was used more on the second gen. This tick sounds more like a diesel but it's completely normal for this engine.

I been hearing a cherping sound from mine. I think it is cus of the new injection system (D4S). My FRS had the same sound before and it was blamed on the fuel pump. I'm guessing it is the same thing.

The 4's have a tick too though!

It's some sort of air sensor in the intake manifold. Once the truck is up to temp and is at idle you can hear a little click-click-click from the intake manifold, it's because the plastic manifold is acting like a trumpet for the PWM solenoid.

Threw me for a loop when I first heard it.:anonymous:

TRD OR 3.5 mine sounds EXACTLY like the video. It's hard to accept that this is normal, but I don't want to "fix" a problem that don't exist. I'm going with the "drive it till it breaks" theory on this one. Yes, I think that a new motor shouldn't sound like this, but I also want to believe that Toyota has done enough testing to know this isn't a problem. If it is serious and heads need replaced or whatever, I'll just go back to Nissan...

Oh it's there, but you won't notice unless you pop the hood with it fully up to temp and idling (as in, drive for a while). It comes from the driver's side (intake side) of the engine, somewhere on the plastic manifold down low. I haven't bothered to feel around with a stethoscope but it's clearly not from the top end or valve train, and it's not the injectors clicking either. It's some wacky emissions sensor supposedly.

So after a few months of listening to this noise. I've come to the conclusion that it definitely isn't the self cleaning of the injectors. It is either the mechanical fuel pump clattering around (I really think it might be this) or I may have some sort of issue. I took it in to a dealer and the head mechanic said he heard what I heard and that he would call me as soon as they could bring a toyota rep in. They never called me. Going to go back to the dealer tomorrow to see if I can get anything figured out. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I feel like the noise isn't a "tick" so much as it is a clatter coming from under the passenger side of my engine.

These vehicles don't have mechanical fuel pumps... Haven't for a long time!

    Just watched your vid...
That's a knocking sound at that end of the motor! Man, I sure hope you don't have rod knock. It would be a first here on the 3rd gens.

Ah, yes. Sorry, that one is and its the direct injection High pressure pump. I was talking about the in-tank pump, which is electric.

    Dear friends,
Been dealing with this since day one (50 miles at delivery) with my 2017 TRD Sport. Have had the truck at two different dealers. Set up an appointment with one of them and a field rep thru Toyota Corp. He went thru the truck (with one of those engine stethoscopes) and stated that although it sounds like she's giving up one of the lifters the fact is that it's the High Pressure Fuel Pump that's mechanically driven off the cam. He claimed that Sienna and Highlander have the same pumps so I visited their forums. Sure enough, same issue. Granted some are much louder than others but that's what that noise is on the passenger side of the engine bay. The injectors are more of a "chatter". Anyway the rep stated that the design is flawed but has no effect on the vehicle. Sounds like shit but will run forever. I'm pushing a bit harder now and opened another ticket with Toyota Corp. to have it replaced. I may luck out and get it to run a bit quieter or end up with the same crappy noise or they'll just tell me to live with it. It's gonna take a few weeks to get this sorted out ( I already have a case number) but I'll keep you all posted. May I suggest that if you're really pissed about the noise is to make some of your own with Toyota.
