I just replaced my spark plugs today. I got them at OReilly's and when I asked for a gauger the guy offered to gap them for me.
I didn't watch him too closely and when I was replacing the plugs I noticed one looked like this:
    kTtHgfjoCVYB_-gCYuB3Id1tAR3VEyhYA-YGAP5H_acf9f0f0750562ab96dd1e2213dc9f139938cb65.jpg
It appears that the hook (ground electrode) doesn't sit very far over the center electrode.

This is what the other ones and one of the old ones I took out look like:

The ground electrodes on these seem to be further over the center electrode.

The difference seems marginal but I'm wondering if it will make a difference and if it's important enough for me to take it out and re-gap it.

That will still fire with no problem, but it’s easy to bend it like the others and re-gap. You should always check your own gap on your plugs and then you will know it was done correctly.

Some spark plugs come pre gapped, and can be damaged if you try to gap them anyway.

Can't tell from a picture if they're gapped correctly anyway, unless they're way off.

My manual says to gap to 0.043 so I told him to do that. No way of knowing if he did it correctly cuz I didn't get the gauger.
I started doing most of my own maintenance to have less of a chance of nit wits wrenching on my truck. Should have gapped the damn things myself.

Yea my truck is running fine so I guess its firing but its always gonna be on the back of my mind now. I might just go back in a bend and re-gap it so I don't have to worry about it.

Difference in the apparent gap is caused by new electrode and ground. The old plug is burnt. It likely started out looking like the new one. When you gap use a pair of spark plug gaping pliers. Ensures proper alignment of electrode and ground and protects the plug.

Here's one for the group. Does anyone still index plugs?
