Is this the correct plier for the outboard CV boot clamp

Hi Folks,

Is this the correct/best tool for the job? I have a leaky boot that i think just
needs to be tightened more as i haven't found any tears/holes in the boot.

I saw a 'Performance' brand (with Red Handles) at my parts store, but those looked pretty cheap.
I don't want to damage the clamp with a bad tool.

Hi, I bought tool like these when I replaced my cv boots and also one that looked like a metal block that you tightened down with bolts.... had trouble with both myself, they slipped off couple of times and I ended up just putting radiator clamps on them and tightened the heck out of them. Also check and retighten them every couple of months

I have a cheaper version of this tool and I really like this type of clamp. The clamps are 1 size fits all. You wrap it around the boot, the tool winds it up tight, and then you bend the strap over and then there’s tabs that you bend over to retain it.

I will probably go with a regular worm clamp if i can't get this tightened...i've heard that works pretty well with the correct width clamp.

The outboard Clamp is not the bend over kind like you have posted...the outboard clamps are called 'Ear' Type clamps like these...

Some of the CV boot pliers are a little different from others. I have a generic oetiker type and also something similar to these below (budget version of Lisle). They have a small tab in between the jaws that keeps pressure on the top of the crimp. It probably isn't necessary but something inexpensive like these will work if you're not doing this for a living.

My point was, to cut off the clamp that you have and put on the type I posted. I absolutely hate the type of clamps you have. They're made with 1 thing in mind. Speed of assembly on a production line.

 

Oh sorry man, i misunderstood. If i can't get this one tightened i'll cut the crap off and do as you suggest...

Once you have the type of clamps I posted and the tool, you will be amazed at all the things you can clamp together. Think of it as zip ties on steroids.

 

You can use a regular pair of dykes to crimp Oteiker clamps. Do it all the time on skis.

You can, but you're primarily applying force to the side of the crimp that the pliers are on- so it'll be unevenly crimped across it. If you were going to use generic pliers, a dull end nipper would be the best choice as it applies force evenly- same as the proper tool but without the "anvil" that presses into the top of the crimp.

 

Have you actually used these pliers for an Oteiker clamp? It works with hoses running over 100 psi of water, so it'll work on a CV boot.
