Is this the VDC? How do you turn it off?

Excuse me guys, searched around and couldn't find a thread about this.
I went offroading with a buddy of mine and he has a 2010 Tacoma TRD Offroad Pkg.
And we went into some mud, as soon as we lost traction, his wheels locked up and wouldn't spin.
One of my other buddies told me it was the VDC.
Im not sure, so Ill ask you guys.
What is this exactly? Is there anyway you can turn it off?
