Previous gen sure did (obviously not the original or older gens were round) at least while I was deployed, so not a honda ridgeline copy, but what do I know.

Okay thank you captain obvious/thread police.

Sure looks round and car like to me...

I completely agree on RHD feeling natural. After a little bit of time wrapping my brain around it and developing muscle memory, it's a breeze now. Is that a LC70 you have?

It's too bad all the importers want a arm and leg for the r34's though, that and they usually have a ton of miles on them

Oh and a little FYI for all those that do want to import a diesel from Australia, since I can't see american diesel being much different from Canadian diesel.
I know 2 people that have imported the older land cruisers (troop carrier ones) as diesel and they had to completely overhaul the fuel system since it doesn't work with our diesel
Same thing with an old hilux one of those owners brought in.

Not sure if its the same for Japan as all the diesels I've seen imported were australian models.

BUT on that note, German diesels work fine as a friend of mine has 2 diesel Audis from europe.
And for gas same case. Talked to the owner of an old Audi S2 at a car show here. that lives in Nova Scoita, no problems with fuel

meh depends where you go through.
I've seen them around 20K with roughly 80 000miles on the clock.

Hell if you want one with a blown engine for rebuild I know of two in Toronto right now. Going for cheap too.
RHD supra can be yours for 8k
try getting a LHD one for anywhere close to that haha.

That's way better then I've seen, though I haven't seriously been looking. Maybe I need to rethink about getting a project car

if you're looking for an off the boat show quality car ya no possible chance.
But if you're looking for something to build or track, can get them pretty cheap.

One shop here north of Toronto in one of the suburbs that my friend works at is currently building 3 of them for racing.
Bodies are whatever, scratches a few small dings etc but who cares they're being built for racing they'll be beat to shit anyways.
one is a GTS being built for drift so its going to be beat anyways lol

Understanding that some aren't well versed in ROW models the Toyota Hilux was first introduced in the 1970's on the Stout chassis and have followed suit matching the Toyota Pick-Up chassis for years until the Hilux name was separated into it's own specific model type and has sense gradually evolved cosmetically into what we see today on sites like Toyota.com.au and the like. Thus when people make blanket statements about the styling of all generations if confuses those that are interested in learning more about the original sub-models and the eventual stand alone that now exists.

I'm not the police but when someone makes a statement like that on the third page following what I posted about my actual experiences I have to ask why? Now I understand that some are simply slower at hitting "reply to thread" than others.

Yes, It's a HZJ77HV-PEU with the 4.2 1HZ inline six. I actually waited until the 1HZ model years became legal to import before I jumped in. My problem is that when I get back into the Tacoma or the 4Runner I end up hitting the wiper lever when I'm aiming for the turn signals. My six year old thinks that it's hilarious. Like I mentioned before, my wife was actually thinking about buying your truck from Steve but then started to waver and told me that she was changing her mind and wanted a Hilux Surf instead. Thankfully that lets me keep spending on my truck projects for a bit before I need to write a check for hers.

We have to wait so long for two reasons. The "Mo-Town Three" helped the EPA establish the guidelines for the tier 0 standards and their lobbyists made certain that the following standards always remained "fuel neutral" which meant that all engines had to meet the same emissions criteria which as you can imagine even light duty diesel engines wouldn't be able to compete with small light duty petrol engines. Many see this move as a way to stop the Japanese take over of fleet vehicle sales - Isuzu Motors points to this legislation when asked about their withdrawal from the U.S. market - that were certainly putting a huge dent in domestic manufacturers sales.

The other reason is also due to Detroit lobbyist pleading for government to "protect the American workforce" with a side note to operator and passenger safety as at the time many nations didn't have a Ralph Nader of their own and were a bit more lax about certain safety measures that were already being mandated in cars sold in the States. Using this argument it was determined that government officials couldn't be bright enough to determine if the ROW imported vehicle had been brought up to current U.S. standards and were to use Ralph's favorite expression, "unsafe at any speed."

As to the diesel fuel issues. Most diesel sold in SEA - South East Asia - has a higher sulphur lead content that simply isn't allowed in most other parts of the world. To compensate for that I simply add a small bit of Lucas injector cleaner and fuel conditioner at every other fill up.

EDIT: I wrote sulphur but meant lead, my apologies for the confusion.

Same reason I could ask as to why you even responded with a post regarding my post. If the point was made before, why reply to my reply?

And yes my original statement in regards to the hilux's styling was not specific but just in response to the fact as of recent years it has maintained a car like appearance, toyota didn't deviate to copy the ridgeline as someone mentioned.

And very impressive post/knowledge in regards to the history and design.

Truth. Since my LandCruiser won't be setting any land speed records it's not an issue for me except for planting and harvesting seasons when the big equipment is out.

The fuel economy in my Hilux has exceeded my expectations. If that diesel made it to the U.S. back then it would have been devastating to the big 3.

Looks like a great example and that engine is a beast for it's size. If you are importing or are buying a previously imported vehicle I suggest looking at a JDM import over imports from other nations. Japanese people take excellent care of their automobiles and are known to not eat or drink in their cars. They do smoke in them however so expect to find an ashtray that will need additional attention once you get aloe of it if you can't stand the smell. The interiors come pretty well scrubbed out and many legitimate importers such as Land Cruisers Direct do some serious deodorizing before even listing them. The one thing that you will find that they do which frustrates some is change out steering wheels. For some reason aftermarket steering wheels are a big deal there. Friends stationed in Okinawa sent me heaps of pictures of awesome LandCruisers and Hilux trucks with the kookiest steering wheels.

@Friggin Fuego, how did you insure your truck? I ask as I use State Farm and got an "agreed upon replacement value" policy from them that guarantees that I will get the agreed upon value if it becomes a loss. I don't know how other companies do it and have been curious.
