Is this what you call "axle wrap?"

I got underneath to lube the universal joints and found what I take to be the slip joint at the forward end of the aft most shaft under an accordian boot.

I really don't want to try taking the shaft down and then pulling the slip apart. I'll just wait till I get the TSB performed and see if stiffing the springs doesn't take away the juddering thump I occasionally feel.

By the way, reading on this further I found that axle wrap is especially common in axle - under - spring designs like this is. I'm pretty sure the thump I'm feeling is the sticky slip joint brought on by the axle wrap now.

    and HAH...I didn't answer, I guessed! You answered...thanks...

Dude just go to autozone and get a pair of Superior brand u-bolt clamps for $15 and torque that u bolt down over the leafs between the axle and the front shakle. This will get rid of your axle wrap. I have this on my 1st gen and it cured it. http://www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-suspension/29883-my-variation-helper-spring-mod.html

The other option is to get Hellwig's helper springs.. http://www.jcwhitney.com/performanc...22&zmam=15972153&zmas=21&zmac=141&zmap=476322

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=198266 (note this uses a pair of helper springs in an up-side down position. Note that the only component you need is the large u-bolt, meaning the helper spring is useless.)

i just read the thread on toyotanation about the reverse helper springs. ...no one in that thread mentioned removing the spring and just using the clamps. ..not that i don't believe you, but if the helper spring is useless, you'd think people would remove them and just use the clamps

edit - nevermind. the link above it explains it all.

So after reading all about these helper springs I see this about just using the clamp. With this you clamp the stock helper spring on the front end so it doesnt curve down anymore and this replicates what the helper spring mod does? I do see this point as well, but why isnt this just done in practice when leafs are built/installed?

I'm a new member and just saw this thread and it is exactly what I'm experiencing with my '02 Prerunner with auto (No mods). When I come to a stop (especially happens on a hard stop) when I release the brake I get a "thunk" and even see the shift lever move forward. If I ease into the stop I can almost eliminate it and if I shift into N when braking it's gone. So what do you think? Is this axel wrap or the splines binding? Thanks.

had the clamps not corrected the issue, adjusting the rear brakes was going to be my next move.

My 2010 experienced this today for the first time. I've got 18k and upon acceleration it "clunked" from the rear pretty bad. My kids freaked. It went away I suspect after warming up. Ideas?

It's approximately 20 degrees out. I was on a 5% incline. Completely stopped at a light. It clunked as if the ass fell out of it.

    Hope that helps.

Stop start clunk has always led me to suspect worn u joint, slip yoke etc.. I have 97,000 on my 06 and have noticed some clunking upon takeoff. I am due to grease my dl and will def check for excessive wear. I like to check the dl while vehicle is on a lift in neutral parking brake off. This seems to make it easier to tell how much play is really in the system.

Wonder if any taco owners that have replaced there two piece units with a one piece still encounter this issue?

usually axle wrap occurs in trucks that have a significant lift in the rear. If you have regular leaf springs or even the tsb with an aal it would be highly unlikely to experience any axle wrap. I would look into other issues if I were you.

To bring this back up front.
My 07 Prerunner also had the 'clunk after letting off the brak'e for a year now.

After I had the dealer adjust / rebuild the rear brakes the clunk is gone. Plus the brakes seem more effective.
I suspect the rear brakes were misadjusted from the factory and provided little to no braking power. After wearing away what little lining contacted the drum, they didn't do squat anymore. This caused the engine/tranny to load up the suspension while stopping. On front brake release the tension in the driveline released with a clunk / thump. Sort of like the rear end keeps pushing forward while the front brakes held the front tires 'bowing' the Taco like a giant spring.

Cost me U$57 for brake adjustment and U$20 for two rebuild kits (no idea what's in those).

My 06 Prerunner 4.0 Auto Access cab has the same clunk after stop when brakes released. Truck is stock with 60K. Does not do it on a gentle stop. Alway does it on a hard stop or somewhere in between. Interesting that it could be brakes. Wonder if it could be related to shutter I feel in the middle of 1st (low range) gear. One thing I have noticed is after a hard stop, putting in neutral then back in Drive..no clunk when I release brake. Makes me think it is a tranny issue.

My mother in laws FJ did it almost all of the time. Always wondered what the hell was wrong every time I rode in it. Noticed it in my 2010 pre-prerunner and every once and a while in the 2011 4x4 that I have now.
