True when getting quotes one shop told me he will have to quote me higher on the labor, because I'm bringing my own parts.

Most legit shops will not install customer supplied parts.
Because of the liability is dumped on them
if the supplied part turns out to be wrong or subpar
and screws up the job requiring another attempt.

Time is money and doing things twice isn't often applauded by most.

I think his point is that making a blanket statement that mechanics at a Toyota dealership are better than mechanics at Shop XYZ just because the truck being serviced is a Toyota is flawed

Techs get trained on electronics, they don't get trained on timing belt replacements on 14 year old trucks.

The mechanic who has been doing them for the past 15 years down the road is less expensive, more experienced, and isn't "factory trained."

@TacoDell seems to enjoy a good debate, despite nobody caring.

...^^^... Exactly my thinking on most heavier duty vehicle repairs & service ... I can eventually get it done, not fast though, and with many trips to get supplies.

I do better working on my house than working on my vehicle.

Got mine done last Saturday, brought my own parts from aircabinman on eBay. Their "package" was 880 for a v6 and only includes water pump timing belt and drive belts and thermostat.

I got a quote for labor only and had the service guy charge me an hour or two labor and had both pulleys, tensioner, cam seals and front main seal done too. I walked out all set for 890 with all the extra work...deal!

For what it's worth Toyota Dallas was going to charge 1600 for just timing belt and water pump.

I just called them, it's 299.99 with timing belt only. It's not on sale, but they said call back later maybe it get lower.
