Wife worked for an independent small home town bank that didn't have a large amount of cash on hand unless you called ahead.

one of my favorites is when you google, let's say a New BBQ grill or a new set of tires. The next time you log into your microsoft email account, there are advertisements for those products showing up.

Unless you're paying cash for every purchase you make, they know exactly what you've bought and when.

Google is a business. Businesses need income to operate. You aren't paying by the minute to use it, its a free search engine. They have to generate revenue somehow, so they sell your shopping and searching habits to advertisers.

This is not a new thing..

Imagine how things could be different if everyone agreed to pay a little bit to use a search engine. For example, back when Google was getting started, if everyone had chipped in something like one penny per minute it could have allowed them to structure their business model differently.

But everyone laughed at the idea of paying money to use the internet.. so the advertisers happily jumped in and took over and now here we are. The whole thing is just a way to find out what you'll open your wallet for, and then put the appropriate ads in front of you

We weren't forced into this. We chose this for ourselves

They were talking about lowering it to some ridiculous low amount like $600 or something - can't remember the actual amount. I don't know what stopped it but I can imagine that would have been really expensive for the banks to implement. Anyway I remember it being a BIG deal and then it just went away.

Hummmm . . . . if someone is really concerned about privacy then why are they even sharing their private thoughts here over the Internet?

Wow, I read the title of the article and then all 4 pages of "this is despicable" comments before I actually read the article. Then I actually read the article. The "intercepting and recording" of driver's private text messages sounds alarming, but if you think about what our trucks are actually doing - it just means that in order to be able to voice txt while driving, the head unit has to first copy the texts to local memory before you can hear the digital Toyota lady in your dash (I call her Jan) read it to you. The article then makes the statement that automakers (like all businesses nowadays) routinely sell marketing info of your customers. It was stated that way to sound alarming, but it does NOT mean that Toyota is gaining access to any info in text messages. It just means that your truck downloads the texts to local memory so that it can display/read them to you.

When you connect your phone via bluetooth the truck asks your permission first to be able to see txts and contacts so that you can use hands free options while driving. If you don't want the truck to do this, then you can say no or simply not connect to the truck's bluetooth. There is nothing "sneaky" about this that I can see.

The only legitimate privacy concern I see in the article is the reporting that while there is no way for a driver to routinely access the stored txt data on the head unit memory, if requested by law enforcement Toyota could crack open the physical drive and provide that data in an investigation. Same issue with phones.

That is my understanding of what the alarming-sounding article really says, but if I am missing something please correct me...
