I'd rather push my Tacoma than drive a Ford or GM product,

Though this article was poorly written and borderline useless... It's point was the exact opposite of what you are saying. Rather than try to "block" or "counter" the hit, they are staying out of the way or dodging (i.e. not making a new truck) and later, you could say after the punch is thrown, they are going to produce their new truck, (i.e. a counter punch)

That is what this article claims.

I agree the article does not really say much, but can agree with the little that I get out of it. I don't know if it's for sure Toyota's strategy, or if it is just working out that way with their development schedule, but I agree that it might work in Toyota's favor to have the others come out with their new products, and then throw that counter punch. Almost like having the last say - always the best position to be in - ask my wife, she knows.

I think Toyota's counter punch if it comes in normal late summer early fall 2016 will not find much of an audience. The gen 2 Tacoma has 11 model years of production and Toyota has not addressed basic deficiencies that members on this forum have been concerned with for years such as the recent rear spring recall, frames that rust excessively much less a bland and outdated interior, less than stellar brake pedal feel, a now outdated auto transmission. GM's Twins have landed a powerful punch on Toyota's nose which has already been reddened by declining reliability.

As someone who was seriously considered a new Tacoma this year, the lack of change for 2015 has me looking at the Canyon so I might not be in the room if and when the New Tacoma lands and I'm thinking a lot of other potential Tacoma customers will be gone also.

So what's holding you up? Ordered one yet? Sounds like you should trade right away. Come on up to Maine I'll show you some pretty rusty Ford and Chevy frames that Ford and Chevy don't replace that are worse that any Toyota frame you have ever seen What has Chevy replaced in the last 20 years except the body work same suspensions same trans same old push rod engine nothing new here move along.

I think The 3rd Gen will have a good audience, Tacoma's have a good following and are a well know nameplate. I know a lot of people who have had great luck with there Tacoma's and are patiently waiting for the 3rd gen. Yeah it seems like it has taken Toyota a while but they to come to the table with a new truck but they are just following there model cycle. The Last gen Colorado went 10yrs before GM dumped it. You are correct in saying the twins bring a lot to the table and they should as they are a new platform, but they are just now at a level where they can actually compete with the Tacoma. That is until Toyota hits back with the 3rd gen and then GM is behind again.

    Hi,

Because I live in Iowa my Tacoma isn't eligible for any frame remedy. So maybe I should move to Maine.

I can't say that my Tacoma has been all that much better than my '92 Ranger. Of course I wasn't surprised with the problems I had with my Ranger. But I didn't have to replace right rear axle seals three times, first two well within the warranty period, third time on my own dime and time along with the bearing assy and brake shoes that the leaking gear oil took out. I didn't have a left rear seal go out along with the bearing at less than 60K miles on the Ranger. I replaced the front wheel bearings (both sides) on the Ranger for about $40 , right front on the Tacoma $275 for the part. Never replaced a u-joint on the 135K mile Ranger, one on the Tacoma didn't make 50K miles. I have always disliked the mushy brake pedal feel of the Tacoma, even though a Toyota tech noticed it himself and tried to remedy it.

So just saying, your experience may be different. There is a lot to like on the Tacoma and maybe my expectations where too high but recent reliability issues with this vehicle are making me look at new and the only NEW that make sense for me are the GM offerings.

    COST vs BENEFITS

Toyota is smart enough and have enough cash flow to do ANYTHING they choose to do (business wise). With that being said they also have limited resources (engineers, designers, marketers...). This year they have the mid cycle updates for the 4Runner, Camry, NEW Corolla so they need to prioritize their resources. Also, the Taco is doing SO WELL. The Chevy and GMC are not on sale yet so what is the threats? We know they have the 3rd gen coming, probably Aug-Oct 2016 time frame. So, just go on with the current Taco for 2015 model year, no need to break the sale record for this last year model because everything (R&D cost) is already accounted for * 3/4/5 times.

Yes, it is the strategy of doing LITTLE and getting LOTS back, COST vs. BENEFTS.

Can't wait to see about the 3rd gen (in person).

Someone who is in the market for a car wouldn't look at a metro and a McLearen for possible purchase.

But, someone looking for a truck, who is not a fan boy, would probably look at the tacoma, then a couple full sizes. Then think if the price of tacoma justifies driving around in a smaller vehicle with less power, and equivalent gas mileage.

So I'd def say the tacoma competes with the 1/2 ton series.
