I grew up in the south where you never needed 4x4. My buddies all had 2x4 trucks and we rarely got stuck wheeling them. My first truck was a 2006 Ranger 2x4, I bought brand new when I was 18 and just joined the Air Force. I moved to Nebraska, and during my first winter wrecked my Ranger due to being an inexperienced driver in the snow/ice. I got my truck fixed, and drove that 2x4 through 3 winters in Nebraska. In 2009 I traded the Ranger for a new Grand Cherokee 4x4. From that point on I realized the benefit of a 4x4. I traded my Jeep for a 2011 WRX (because the Jeep was a really boring car), and found out that AWD doesn't always help either. AWD with high performance summer tires causes just as much white knuckle driving as my 2x4 Ranger did in the winter. Now I have my Taco, and she is 4x4. While 4x4 isn't needed 95% of the time, it pays for itself 1000 fold that 5% you do.

2wd. Considering it was free, I try not to whine about it.

That only applies to the sand with good tires and plowed snowy roads:stirthepot: haha.

I have skinny KM2's and when I go play in the sand near me, I have a hell of a time getting going again if I ever stop while in 2wd even with the rear locker. The tires just dig down too easily no matter how you use the throttle. Now if I had some BFG K/O's that weren't so skinny it would probably be a whole different story. Haha

Let's see your 2wd drives do this stuff:stirthepot: or about half the stuff in my build thread for that matter. Haha

That's on 33's with about 3" of lift.

    Ok, I'll play along.

Tell you what; come to Maine in February, and we'll go 'upta camp'
It's only a couple miles in, but the road doesn't get plowed. We'll see who gets further before breaking out the shovels. Or you can come up in April, when the road turns to ooze, and we'll try the same experiment.

While I agree that you don't need 4x4 if you're driving on the road in the winter, it does make things easier (and safer) if you do it intelligently. Plus, not all driving is done on road.

2WD, but I have never needed 4wd here, if I lived in snowier/ hillier/ more fun places the extra 3500 to 6k to have the 4wd would be worth it. I do drive it in the snow here without problems, but snow here has a way of not sticking around more than a day or two....

Come and drive in Canada when it's the dead of winter during a blizzard when it's -40C outside with a foot a snow. You'll see why. :) Troll.

If you can't afford a 4x4, or don't need or want one than that's ok, but to deny that it's more capable off road is absurd. I personally switched from my PreRunner Sport to 4x4 OffRoad for the 4x4 mudflaps so when I'm cruising the mall I look cooler .

At least you're not running a 4x2 with 4x4 mud flaps.
