I have the short bed double cab 3rd gen and trying to figure out whether I will be able to stay safely within payload limits with this camper.

Rough calculations for a fully loaded adventure trip for 2 people for a week.

Camper - 360lb (super pacific or something similar)
    Full skids - 70lb
    2 people - 300lb
    Full tank Fuel - 175lb
    Dog - 80lb
    Portable Battery (Ecoflow delta 2) - 30lb
    Water - 50lb (5 gallon can)
    2x Hiking / climbing gear - 60lb
    2x MTB plus hitch - 90lb
    2x Clothes and other travel - 100lb
    Food for a week - 30lb??

    Total weight - 1345lb

Some items above are on the heavy estimate but have I missed anything? Think I’m right around the limit for my truck. Would I need to upgrade my brakes or suspension at this max limit?

Other option I’m thinking is to step up the truck to 1/2 or 3/4 to more easily handle the weight for a dedicated camping rig.

You are over the limit. Nothing you can do to increase the limit. That said, use common sense.
You can upgrade truck. Go 3/4 ton for good limit.

Looks like you’re close or maybe even over, but the sticker in your door jamb has the GVWR for your specific truck, they’re all a little different depending on trim and options.

GVWR is a recommendation. I’ve gone over with my 4Runner. But I’d go with 3/4.

Don’t know how anyone with these rigs stay under the limit. I felt my list was pretty basic?!

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
What you've listed is all payload weight. What does your door jamb sticker say?

Taco is the first time I've even thought much about weights. My main changes from stock are fiberglass canopy and slider steps. Empty truck with full tank of gas, me, wife, kid = 5450 pounds measured at the scales at the local dump yard. Pretty pathetic, a Corolla is more of a real hauling vehicle. That said, I don't hesitate to load up the family, put a bunch of yard care equipment in the bed, hitch up a utility trailer to go take care of the property in the sticks.

So a half-yard of soil is about 1,000 pounds - I pick up a half-yard for back-yard-gardening about every other month.
Just unloaded one yesterday and picking up another half this week. Hmmmm.

Full tank of gas is part of your curb weight.

    GVWR-curb weight=payload

Full tank of gas is about 130 lbs.
Your payload total is 1,215 lbs.

People would freak if they saw what I used to do with an 80s Ford Ranger.

Problem comes in when you want to drive 80mph on the interstate. It's fine to be heavy, just drive it like it's heavy, stay off your phone, and don't do anything stupid.

BTW: unless it’s in Jerry cans, fuel isn’t “payload.” So your calculated weight is 1170 lb, versus whatever your door jamb label says. If it is 1150, you are in rounding error territory…nothing wrong with using the truck at its limit.

BTW: a full tank of gas is 80 L, which is only 132 pounds…but I assume your other guesstimates are closer.

Its probably a good guess the GVWR rating assumes highway driving. If you run that weight off road then you may want to upgrade your suspension if you haven't already.

Driving alone, my typical load unless I’m hauling stuff in the bed is
    Me: 182 lbs
    Add ons exterior ~100 lbs
cargo in cab access area ~100 lbs
    Tonneau ~65 lbs

So I’m still around 1050 lbs below capacity, good to go lol.
