I'm trying to add a second key to my 2015 Tacoma. I purchased a new G key from the Toyota dealer and had them cut it. I've got Techstream v12 on my laptop. The drivers for the Mini VCI cable appear to be configured correctly because I can connect to the truck and read info, etc. When I use the wizard to add a new key to the immobilizer, I get to the final step (where you insert the new key into the ignition) and then get this error. I've tried several times. Has anybody else ever seen this issue?

Are you sure you have the correct key type?

It's marked "G", just like the master key. Are there different types of G keys?

Is it possible that there are already 3 keys programmed into the ECU and it will not accept another?

Actually, good point. I thought of that, but it's not the case. There is an attribute that says whether or not the max number of keys has been reached. Thanks for the suggestion though.

At this point, I'm going to try a couple of other odb to usb devices (different versions). If none of them work, they'll all go back to Amazon and I'll go to the dealer in defeat. The local locksmith already tried with his device and failed. Maybe something is just wrong with the truck?

Sure there isn't something wrong with the key itself? Maybe the chip is bad? I got no idea if you can test the chip.

When I bought my 2015 used it came with one G key. Took some time to find a locksmith that could program that key (almost 2 years ago) but $40 for the key and $50 for programming and I was on my way. Dealers wanted like $200 :annoyed:

Well, I've tried 2 different OBD to USB cables, one stand alone device, and multiple versions of Techstream. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow morning. I'll let you all know if there is some issue with the key or truck. I'd much rather be doing suspension upgrades or stereo mods and not this crap :)

Could be the obd call cable your using the toyota ones are Mongoose 500$ jobs know you can do it with cheaper cables but has to be configured properly. Just because it connects to the truck doesn't mean it will program the key.

Just got back from the dealer. According to them, the key was "corrupted". I didn't realize that something could happen to the key. I thought all the programming was done in the truck and the key was read-only. Regardless, they cut a new key for free and programmed it into the truck. I've got 2 working keys now. I'm ready to move on to better things now :)
