    Hey guys,

Just bought a new 2022 Tacoma SR5 and i'm having some issues. A week after I bought the truck, I had to have it towed to the dealer for loss of power. Just stalled out on me on the highway.

They told me it was a fuel pressure issue but couldn't find anything wrong with it. Blamed it on me running the fuel too low...which seems absurd.

It's running now, but i'm noticing some weird occasional hesitation and surging. It's very rare but enough to cause concern.

With my limited knowledge of vehicles, it seems like some kind of vacuum leak.

I'm under warranty of course, but wondering if anyone else has seen these kinds of issues with a brand new Tacoma, and wondering what I should do about it?

Not a great start for what I hope to be a reliable 20 year vehicle for me.

Well .. you have a warranty.. if any more issues come up that you don’t like you can take it and have it Document it and you can also call corporate so they can document it says any issues pop up down the road do you have documentation about it

Sucks that you got a brand new vehicle and it stalled out. But obviously they want to try and put the blame on you running the vehicle out of fuel. Very well could’ve been a low pressure fuel issue.

Yeah I mean I drove it until it had 22 miles to empty. Filled it up. Drove probably 100 miles and that's when it stalled. Maybe some bad gas or dirt from the fuel tank worked its way into the system? Still seems like that definitely shouldn't happen.

I have a 2001 4Runner and have never had that issue no matter how low it got.

    Oh look, another mod....
That is total bullshit. I have driven my truck with "x miles until empty" showing on the read out. And I have never had it stall out. Many times the "Miles to empty" got down into the low single digits (I was being a cheap ass and waiting for gas prices to drop just a little bit more).

It sounds like you may have a defective fuel pump/system or maybe the filter is bad and got clogged? It could also be the simplest thing: Bad gas. That happens from time to time.

22mi to empty leaves 3gal in the tank. I've filled up with more than the rated capacity (21.1gal and filled with 21.3gal) and had no issues. If they pull that again, find another dealer for warranty work.

I have driven my truck down to 3-5 km till empty... not on purpose but has happened handful of times now. That is just shy of a liter of gas if I am averaging 14liters/100km

22 miles until empty? That is ridiculous for them to blame you. When exactly do you need to fill up? 50 miles until empty? 100?

If you can find a different dealer to go to. If you cant then just go in and be assertive. Dont let them bullshit you like that again.

    Yeah.
As someone else stated, that "miles to empty" will still leave you with a small buffer of fuel, typically around 3 gallons. Not that you should count on that, though. Reminds me of a complaint I just read from a RAV4 owner:

CAR HAD A LOW FUEL INDICATOR ON (APPROX. 15MILES DISTANCE TO EMPTY LEFT ON A DASHBOARD). UPON REFUELING, THE CAR ONLY TOOK ABOUT 11.38 GALLON OF FUEL TO REFILL THE EMPTY TANK. THIS IS VERY ANNOYING AS I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW THINKING IT HAS 14.5 GALLON FUEL TANK CAPACITY BUT IN REALITY IT HAS A DEFECTIVE FUEL TANK AND IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT 11 GALLON OF FUEL.

    Funny stuff right there.

I'm in the bad gas camp, but if not, it is under warranty and they will likely find what it is if it continues to happen.

^^ This. I call BS on the dealership. You had somewhere between 3-4 gallons of fuel left. If it was the service writer that told you that and they try and pull that again, ask for the service manager, then find somewhere else to bring your business.

    Even with a 2022 I'll be it's a bad fuel pump

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I've never seen a modern fuel pump go bad "intermittently". When they shit the bed, it's over and done. Maybe a sputter before death but not something you can start up and drive for any distance like you're doing. I could be wrong but I'd guess something else was amiss. They should be able to put it on a scanner and read the detailed fuel data. Maybe Toyota has followed in Boeing's footprints and someone left a shop tool and a wrench in the fuel cell! o_O

Did they explain (or detail on the receipt) how they determined it to be a 'fuel pressure issue'? Did they put more fuel in it and return it to you?

I don't get the stalling out due to the fuel being too low, but as far as the surging, thats just a normal operation with this engine...my 2020 sr5 does that especially when not fully warmed up. I think it has a lot to do with the two modes of fuel injection these trucks have as they switch back, and forth.

That's what i'm wondering...am I just getting accustomed to a new vehicle and being overly sensitive now that i've got it in my head that there's something wrong.

It threw a code that indicated low fuel pressure. By the time it got the dealer the issue had resolved itself apparently. It already had 3/4 of a tank in it when it stalled.

First thing they asked me was had i run it low on fuel recently. I told them, yes, a couple days ago but nothing out of the ordinary. They couldn't find anything mechanically wrong with it so sent me on my way.
