Just noticed this today walking next to truck. My 2018 Tacoma with 24k miles on it has flaking paint off the door. Nowhere else has this issue. Has anyone had this happen? Do you think Toyota would help out on this? It seems like the surface wasnt treated properly before paint.

Sorry to hear that has happened to you. I watch that thread as I have a 2020 with 040 Super White. So far so good. So far from what I can gather is it's mainly affected 2016, 17 and some 18's 3rd gens out of the plant in Mexico. I have also seen some 2nd gens impacted by this as well. Good luck with this. Hopefully Toyota recognizes this as an issue and covers all affected.

do you think they painted these trucks in humid weather or had grease on the surface?

Not enough paint thickness. If it's too thin it will eventually fail regardless of color coverage. White paint has high pigment percentage which results in good color coverage but too thin of a paint application can sneak past if it's not properly monitored. I'm sure the Toyota folks were performing visual checks, but measuring thickness in all areas is suspect.

It's a common problem at the "day" job. We paint non-automotive products, but chasing minimum thickness vs. too much thickness is a constant effort. A minor change in paint viscosity or an extra humid or hot day climate control cannot compensate for requires adjustment to the paint robots.

Dunno if its a thickness thing, but it looks like poor adhesion. Flakes are coming off down to bare metal.

the paint seems to just start flaking off after about 5 years or so. maybe toyota will issue a recall eventually like their old rusty frames.

Make sure you call Toyota direct and make a complaint. Its crazy they still wont issue a recall or TSB.
Some 2nd gen owners have the same issue.

This paint issue is beyond "wax it once a season"

I have this same issue in the same spot with the blue on my '15. I started trying to get something done about it 2 years ago and both Toyota corporate and dealer keep repeating the same "not under warranty" bs. It has nothing to do with maintenance as mine has been hand washed and waxed 2-3 times a year since I bought it. It's clearly faulty paint/process on Toyota's part, they just won't admit it.

As stated definetly call and fill a complaint. My second gen is doing this all over the doors and the hood. We need to keep filing complaints so they accept it and will do something about it. ( From what the toyota rep told me that I talked to. )

exactly. Its crazy they are leaving 3rd gen owners high and dry on this as well. I don't get how they can't admit a problem when 3-4 year old trucks are having the issue as well.

That's what I'm going to do with mine. I have the paint already, I just need to get up the nerve to do arts and crafts on my truck. The quotes I got to fix it professionally have been ridiculous.
