I have two sets of wheels, winter/summer, with their own TPMS sensors. Every time I swap I have to go back a few days later for them re-sync the new sensors. I doubt they are just forgetting as it happens every time on two different vehicles. I suspect it might be because the currently synced wheels are in the back, but it doesn't make sense that if it's reprogrammed it wouldn't take.

Any idea why this keeps happening and how to avoid it?

    Your options are:
    1) get a programmer to put in the new codes.
2)clone the codes into the new TPMS so the truck 'sees' them as the same 4 after the swap.
3)Ignore the light for half the year. <- I do this one!>

Who needs a sensor to tell them their tire is flat anyways lol

Just to clarify, it's not that I need to program it, Discount Tire does that when they swap. The problem is that it doesn't work and I have to go back and have it done again. I'm wondering why it doesn't work. They scan the new sensors and hook up the gizmo to reprogram but it doesn't take. Happens every time. I can't be the only this happens to as it happens every single time. No one at DT can explain it nor do they have a fix.

After the second trip it always works.

Like you mentioned, it's probably something to do with other set in back of truck. Just a wild guess.

I suspect that's the cause, but I don't understand why. They scan the new codes and reprogram via the OBD port so why doesn't it take.

when they reprogram each set of sensors...verify what 4 sets of ID numbers where programmed and check the ID#'s in the tpms system data list
sometimes when programming sensors they can detect other sensors up to 10 feet away

The Easiest setup is to have your second, third, etc, set of wheels have Clone sensors, (Autel 315MX is what I use), installed with the OEM TPMS sensor ID#s added to the new sensor. The truck sees the same 4 ID#s so it's bolt em on, TPMS button activation, and go!
No programming the truck! Then you can swap all four at your own convenience.

I have three sets and only 4 sensor ID#s.

Thanks. I already have the sensors and not sure if they can be cloned. I'll have to see what I can find out. I "think" they are OEM sensors not aftermarket so maybe that means they can't be cloned.
