The Celica has been FWD since 1986, so I'm not sure why anyone would call the TC a "FWD Celica."

Only those who know the true soul of a Celica, and we haven't seen that since the 80s.

I prefer the idea of a RWD Celica as well. I actually owned an '85 notch back.

But, the Celica was FWD for longer than it was RWD. So it's not like it's something new.

In fact, even the Corolla was RWD when the last generation of RWD Celicas came out. So, it's not like being RWD is a characteristic of the Celica. It's just how things were at the time.

A new RWD Celica will not happen, unless they discontinue the '86. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I doubt I will.

I cant see Toyota producing something "cool" without the help of bmw or Subaru again. If they brought back a gt4 celica it would probably just be a two door sti lol.

My take, I would LOVE for Toyota to start making the Celica again, but only if they did it right. Someone mentioned the CH-R and the thought of that being named the Celica makes me gag. It's like what Mitsubishi did to the Eclipse name by slapping it onto a gratuitously ugly CVT-only crossover. SO lame.

I always thought the Celica nameplate went away because FWD coupes in general were not selling. That's why it did well as a Scion I guess, the younger crowd at the time thought of a Celica as a "dad's car." FWD coupes aren't as much of a thing anymore. Chevy Cobalt, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Ford Focus, even the Toyota Solara. More recently, the Scion tC. All FWD coupes that have gone out of production in the last decade due to the sedan counterparts way outselling them. That's most of a new FWD Celica's competition, so what's Toyota supposed to think when they show up to play and the others have taken their ball and gone home? I would love to see a new Celica that captures the soul of the old one. Yes it would probably be FWD. Most Celicas are FWD. Unless Toyota A. Renamed the 86 to the Celica or B. Goes completely wild and builds a turbo-4 Mustang killer on a new RWD platform that's bigger than the 86, a new Celica would be FWD. And that's ok. The 5th gens that I had handled beautifully. The steering was tight, and getting them to understeer was a tough task. Plus I could make it to school or work in the rain or snow without much drama. Very Toyota-like.

I've had two. First one was a 2001 GT 5-speed that looked fast but wasn't. Got it in high school and learned how to drive stick on it. Traded up for a 2003 GT-S 6-speed my freshman year of college. Now, this one had some guts. Drag racing was a recipe to get humiliated, but rolling pulls were tons of fun because of the Yamaha-designed engine that just loves to rev. I still own it. It's sitting back home right now but I would love to bring it out to where I'm at and make it really nice. It's most of the way there.

Overall, I really think that if Toyota gives us a new Celica and really commits to doing it right, they can succeed. Styling it, giving it a strong powertrain with a manual transmission, and managing the public expectations as well as their own are what they would need to accomplish for it to be a success. The managing expectations part is the hardest, right? There are tons of people who somehow expected the 2.0 NA FRS/86 to be fast, and write the car off because it's not. Biggest no-shit moment ever, it's not meant to be fast, at least when it's new. I'd be worried that people would complain of a reborn Celica how it gets whooped by pony cars and it's FWD. And it wouldn't be a high-volume car, which is the part where Toyota needs to manage their expectations to resist canceling it due to low sales.

So, can Toyota make a new Celica and pull it off? I dunno.

Since these young whippersnappers don't know what a real Celica looks like:

Then in 1989, Toyota ruined the concept by changing it to FWD. It was a very sad day!

Those were beautiful cars! If I could have any Toyota from that era, it would be a Crown MS75. They look like a mini muscle car, and came with an early M series inline 6. I'd love to have one with a 1JZ swap.
