No retirement for me. What I would love is to be an application engineer again, something I did 30 years ago for several years.

I care for the people working for me. I have several in the development phase that i am mentoring. I feel I can help them even if they leave for another company. I care, basically.

If you can help them if they leave, can you still help them if you leave?

Help them now and if they leave they will be prepared. I have some great younger people who are really sharp in several areas. I have some older people who I am mentoring also. I just care too much I guess. And, thank God every week is not like this week. This was just a bad one where all the stars aligned to bend me over the table.

Yeah I hear ya. Its always great to help other people, but take care of yourself first - if you're toast, you can't help anyone.

But on the other hand, some weeks just suck.

I just left a after 11 years at a toxic company. It took me a long time to realize I was getting abused because I was good at what I did while the dirt bags got away with murder. I took a 10k/year pay cut but my new job is about 10% of the stress. And it’s stress that comes with the type of work, not self inflicted company BS. I wish I would have switched a long time ago.

Was there a moment that just snapped you out of it, or was it a slow realization?

I signed on to skype with the parents and sister one sunday night, and they said "dude, you look awful, you need to get out of there." After that every stupid thing that happened was just another daily reminder that I needed to go. Leaving was the best decision I ever made, even though it worked out completely differently from how I intended.

It’s kinda been coming for the last few years. Like BSing with guys about years passed was always a stark reminder that we used to actually enjoy what I did and how currently it was sucking the life out of us.
Then one day I got a call from a friend that used to work under me. He said he knew it was a step backwards but that he could get me on with him if I wanted. I figured I was still plenty young so why not. Best move ever.

.....and now I work much closer to home in the Puget Sound, rather than shitty Gulf of Mexico. Which also means I get to drive my truck to work rather than flying.
