I do not have a jack kit for my 02 Tacoma. The spare tire is present. Do I need any special tools for this or can I go with aftermarket tools?

You'll need the tool to lower the spare below bed to ground.
It's the folding crank rod also used for jack.

    4 run, 2 don't
Or anything with a flat tip.

I used a flat head bit (large one) at the end of an extension with a socket wrench and undid mine on the Tacoma; I had no spare tire tools.

Thanks for the info. I will look into this. I might be able to save a buck or 2 using the above mentioned ratchet method.

Then it all depends where the truck lives .

Living in the great liquid brine belt cutting was the only way to remove the spare.

mine lives quite happy now in the bed no more crawling in the slop to check the air pressure.
