Not sure what you mean by front center. Check out the pictures on chassis Unlimited's website. The Tacoma they have on theirs as the model truck has the bumper painted gray, which shows the gaps a bit better than my pictures might. http://www.chassisunlimited.com/bumpers/toyota/95-04-tacoma/toyota-tacoma-front-bumper.html

I like my front bumper, excepting the fact that it does stick out fairly far. I wish it had a bull bar option.

since the grill design is different on the 95-2000ish then the 01-04, the gap in front of the grill is more pronounced. virtually everything available online fits the "first gen" but is all designed for the 01-04. the pics on the website are on a 01-04 front end. what i would like to see is as many different angles and close ups of the space nearest the grill on your truck and bumper please. how goofy does it look if you dont have a winch to put on there right away?

My plan is 1UZ when I can afford to. Always looking for the donor vehicle though, just not sure when I'd get to swapping it. I know I'll blow the 3RZ up eventually

I've been thinking about the different swaps I could do recently. I'm actually leaning towards supercharging or especially turbocharging for more power. It would give me an excuse to rebuild the engine anyway. From some research, the 3rz loves boost. It might be the easiest route for what I'm doing. My question is: why 1uz over ls1?

Those help just fine thanks. seems to be an okay gap. looks empty without the winch so id probably fab up a cover of some sort.

As for the 1UZ i have a good grasp of those engines. My old project Mildred (google Stankbooty Mildred Stanceworks for the build thread), had one and i was well on my way to boosting it. The EARLY 1UZ motors (89-92) had the thicker connecting rods that hold a darn good bit of boost. the 93-94 were thinner and in 95 they went to the 2UZ and beyond.

anyway its a well documented thing where those junkyard lumps can hold 500-600 whp easy with supporting mods. The hard (expensive) part of it is ECU, and transmission related. R154, CD009 (350z), TH400 all have adapters available. I did a ton of research on the manual/boost swap when i had Mildred.

EDIT: Forgot also that damn near everything would be custom fab. The aussies love them some 1uz action but its not so prevalent in the US. nothing really off the shelf fits. ITBs sound AMAZING on a 1UZ they redline at like 7.5k from the factory

That's the part that scares me. I am not a welder by any means, or very good at wiring either. Those are both skills needed, especially for complicated swaps. Props to the 1uz guys for keeping it Toyota. ITB's on a 1uz!?! That sounds savage. I'm looking that up.

I like the idea of a GM swap like the LT or the LS1 but I think that they are a lot of engine for a truck that really doesn't need it. The 1UZ is a very smooth running 4.0L V8 that can be found on the cheap from cars like the SC400 and the older LS400. They have the same basic logic on output from the ECU as well so one could essentially recycle their gauge cluster and some sensors. The LS1 for sure requires at least a 1in body lift at the minimum to fit as the 1st gen frame is too narrow to accept it. I have heard that it may not be required for a 1UZ swap though. I like the option of either a TH400 transmission as you can make those a manual valve body control. But I would be okay with a tundra tranny too. It seems like a nice increase in power without major compromise. These trucks don't need assloads of raw power, they are already light and can get squirrely at high speed. The torque is what you want.

The thing I'm concerned about would be emissions. I know that with diesel swaps, you need to swap an engine in that in the same year as the truck or newer. I'm wondering if that is true with gas engines also?

At that point I may look into registering it as a custom built vehicle or something. But in my state you just have to meet the threshold for safe emissions output cause they don't do a visual or anything. They just stick the hose up my pipe and check that no indicator lights are on. My 4cyl has passed just fine under load (they dyno here in WA) but like I said I'm not sure what the emissions threshold is, it could be based on number of cylinders or something so registering as a custom may be required. I wouldn't swap my daily though, so this will be a bit in the future.

Every time I take my truck through colorado emissions, they had (I kid you not) 5 people with mirrors looking over the truck. The deck plate mod had them perplexed.

IMG_0503.jpg Hey friends, it's been a while since I've posted. A few weeks ago, the speedometer cable broke. Fixed that today. It was a PITA to say the least. Glad I have a working speedometer now. Here's a pic of the new cable next to the old.

I have some stuff to add to the truck eventually. I still have recessed backup lights from secret santa last year that still need to get installed. I won a Camcan at an off-road show in Denver, so that needs to get done. I have seat covers from cover king coming in a few days. I also need to hook up my tachometer. Valve cover is leaking a bit, so that is in the works, along with welding on my sliders. Updates to come!

Any advice? Tackling this over the weekend. Did yours make that awful buzzing noise previously? Hopefully a new cable will fix that on my truck

Having two people makes it much easier. Also, wear eye protection, as many years of dirt will definitely fall in your face. Make sure the exhaust isn't hot. There are 3-4 different brackets that hold the thing in place...all of which you cannot see. The hardest one to reach is on the transmission tunnel. That's about the only advice I can give you. Good luck! @lukester78

That's about what I expected. Did you start from the cluster end or transmission?
