Some progress today. Tomorrow, the head gaskets get swapped and the timing belt/water pump gets replaced. I'm going to repaint the block black and maybe the valve covers red.

IMG_0879.jpg After almost a week, figured out how to get the heads off (didn't have the right tools). The heads have some carbon, but the valves look okay. Nothing some sea foam won't fix.

Today we took off the heads, and my buddy spent probably 2 hrs cleaning the carbon deposits with sea foam and a brush. They look pretty mint. Also, painted the valve covers black. Because...reasons...

IMG_0908.jpg This was an expensive mistake. Always read torque ratings kids. Had to find a used head to remedy this cluster. 500 dollar mistake.

Ouch. That doesn't look fun. I've snapped bolts straight in half by over-torquing them before, luckily on nothing important.

Bummer :( How much did you torque it to past it's spec? You might not know until you do it again with the spec I guess if you were just feeling it out this time.

Awesome regular cab! I don't get on TW too often but definitely following this. I also have a regular cab. I love the 95-97 front end. I tried looking for a v6 regular cab but couldn't find anything so I bought a 98 regular cab. I put a supercharger on it. Decent gains but would have rather had the 3.4.

Nice bumper. I have a trail gear bumper and I also welded a small stinger on. Only problem is its a PITA to work in the engine with it lol.

That thing is a unicorn! (donor). Man I wish I had intermittent wipers! lol. Are you reusing the gauge cluster from the donor? If not would you be willing to sell?

Here are a couple pictures of my taco.

Bone stock when I bought her. 1 Owner 185k miles. Dealer maintained.
    FB_IMG_1490372301959.jpg

As she sits now. Some of my mods are: front and rear arb lockers, 4.88 gears, supercharger, icon extended coilovers and ome Dakar suspension. 33x10.5 tires on 15" Toyota steelies. U bolt flip, sliders, front and rear trail gear bumpers. Rear bumper modified with swing out tire carrier. Rear frame boxed. Northwest offroad header with dynomax exhaust. Currently has 230k miles. Original clutch!! LOL

That is a sweet single cab! I love it! I'm going to try to find a cluster that is closer to my chassis mileage. If I do, I'll sell you the cluster! Can you pm me more pics of the rear bumper if you have time?

Pulled the 3rz out of the taco, and finished up the 5vz. Test fit the motor. The mounts are insultingly close, but are about 1" forward from where they need to be, and a bit more narrow. I guess some grinding and welding is in order.

No real issues, other than a substantial oil leak via the valve cover.

IMG_0934.jpg IMG_0937.jpg Made some progress today. Got the exhaust on. It took me and my buddy DJ a few hours to get the new headers on...and then we realized the new ones didn't have an EGR port. Damn! So, the rusted exhaust went on. Here is how the dialogue went:
Dj: "we should paint the rusty headers"
    Me: "okay! What color?"
    Dj: "red would be cool!"
    Me: "I'm down"

And then we painted the headers. They turned out to be a bright orange. Wtf?

Also, here's a pic of the 4cyl out of the truck:
