    4wd problems...you wouldn't understand.

It was one of my many intoxicated comic relief statements. Mark just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Well I lost 4wd mid hauling-ass. Not entirely sure what happened...just felt loosey goosey. When I got to pavement, I did a hard turn with 4wd enabled and there was no binding so I knew I lost it. Put it on stands this morning and 4wd engaged only the rears are turning. When I flip the front locker on the driver's side turns only. Passenger tire and axle don't move at all. So....I either broke a side gear, or the ADD actuator is FUBAR'd. I dropped the diff off at the gear shop to let them finger out exactly what's wrong.

The good news is...with no front diff there is a LOT more room up front. So I decided to take a peak at the the tiny leak I've noticed over the last year coming from my rack. As it turns out...it's really not a tiny leak, I've just got really good rack boots. I pealed the boots back and at least a quart of PS fluid flooded out. Both drive and passenger side seals on the rack are fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked....and the driver's side inner TRE is slightly bent..and rusted/pitted to shit.

So....I'm taking the opportunity to replace the entire rack, inner TRE's, fix whatever's wrong with the diff, hire a couple midgets to fight under the void where the diff normally is, beat my skid plate back into place, and replace both LBJ's for good measure.

    Sucks, man...

As for the diff, I highly doubt it's a side gear... very well might be the ADD actuator. Would be an easy fix, if so. Is yours electric or vacuum operated? However, I'd place my money on the ADD stub shaft breaking. Let me know if that's the case, I've got a spare I could sell you. Heck, I've got a couple ADD actuators as well.... lol Lemme know, but I forsee this:

ADD is electric..I think. :anonymous: Quite honestly differentials are not my forte. It's one of the few things I don't do myself, (mostly cause I don't wanna learn about them...and don't have the tools). I just drop it off to my diff shop and they figure out wtf is wrong and we go from there, always at a reasonable rate. Hell they only charged me $180 to install my front ARB.
Thanks for the offer on the parts...I'll keep in mind once they diagnose what's wrong.

    EFFING TRUTH!!!!
You wanna know all the week points on a first gen...read my build front to back. I kinda wish this was just a practice truck. I know what I did wrong, what I did right, what to do better, stronger, etc.
Maybe I'll buy a lotto ticket and start over from scratch.

Well fuck! I finally figured out why my toe alignment kept getting knocked out of whack even though none of my paint pen marks moved on all my alignment tabs and tie rods.

Gonna have to think about this one....

No this was definitely on me.
I replaced the rack bushings shortly after I first got the truck and it wasn't like that. From what I read, not entirely uncommon for trucks similar to mine and drivers...umm...like me :anonymous:

FWIW, when I replaced my rack bushings last week my passnger bracket bolts were kinda tweaked like that. Probably not as bad as your but tweaked nonetheless. I had it re-aligned but I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it won't hold the alignment. So far it seems to still be fine. Time will tell. Curious to see what you do about it.
