Yes it will work, just will have to turn up the volume more, I was surprised by the 2.2, looks like the Z has the 4V now. Plenty of room behind the dash on the Tacomas, so that won't be a problem and if you get a steering wheel interface make sure it is the newest firmware to work with the new X models.

This might account for the installer's suggestion that doing a speaker swap only might be dissapointing. I think the new 4 ohm speakers would not sound even as bright as the existing JBL @ 2 ohms.

The mystery is unraveling - sounds like the quickest route to better sounds will be option 3: New HU with new wire runs to new speakers. I think that I've read that running new speaker wires from the new HU is not that difficult in our trucks.

Regarding replacing JBL speakers (for new HU), should I:

    A) Go with Infinity 6x9 2 ways because they could reuse the existing JBL adapter?

    B) Go with 6.5" speakers (and make new mdf adapters) because they sound so much better (do they really?)?

    C) Go with components for the front (Install new tweeter, 6.5" and crossover)?
    1. Is there a good component set for $125-150?
    2. Does Infinity make a set that works in our trucks?
    3. Is this hard to do (if I plan to use all new speaker wires)?

At this point, I don't plan to have an amp and sub. I can probably better use the JBL sub space to store extra gear (sorry audiophiles), but this might change.

K&N airfilter, HID conversion for headlights/fogs. Wet Okole Seat covers, Kove Aphex processor Kenwood comp 6.5" and 6.5"coaxial 5100 billy shocks 2.5", 1.5" fabtech AAL,Epicenter and MTX Sub, debadged, tinted, kenwood dnx812, black mesh grill, led ext/int.
I opted the same. I just recently installed the PAC-TATO with the module set @ 7db. I have this installed to a DDX-896 with 5V @ the RCA. TATO recommends @ least 4V. Let me tell you my experience. I started off just changing my speakers to Kenwood comps up front and kenwood coaxial rear. They sounded decent, better than the JBL speakers they call preiuem. Now adding the new HU, it's totally night and day. First off louder and clearer. The only thing I can complain about is the TATO sometimes does not turn on at first. I have to turn the IGN off then on. I'm not sure if that's a glich in the product or common with this amp.

Yesterday I installed the X920BT along with the Metra TYTO-01, and I did not experience any of the low volume issues in my brief testing.

I was in a hurry yesterday to finish, and did not get time to really listen to it, but from what I can tell I may have set the gain on it a little too high. Moving the volume up 12 steps from 0 on the Pioneer, takes it to a moderate listening level without a problem.

It can be two things that are making it work right. 1. I set the volume to 35 on the stock unit before I removed it. (Read somewhere that one of these devices requires it.) 2. Perhaps Metra did a better job implementing the interface.

I will listen to it some more today, and but I think it will hold me over for the time being.

Listening to it some more, there is a constant amount of static coming from the speakers. The kind of static that comes when the volume has been turned up too high and there is no music playing.

I am going to leave it for now since I already bolted in the headunit. I plan on installing the SWI nnext week, and I will adjust it then.
