JBL Entune 2.0 to Entune 3.0 Transplant

I have the entire system for transplant. JBL head unit and adapter. JBL amp and adapter
And the usb adapter. Paid almost 2k for all. I love it but I’m getting ready to install a hertz stereo system and gonna go with stinger.

I just went from a 2018 JBL w/nav to a 2022 JBL w/nav, part number 86140-04210. I used autopartsearch.com to find the head unit from a junk yard. I paid $630 shipped for it. Be patient and wait till one that’s not overpriced shows up. You have to replace the amplifier too. The old amp won’t work (I tried it) and it has to be a 2020 or newer. I used autopartsearch.com again and found a 2021 for $295 shipped. That’s ridiculously overpriced, but I’ve never been able to find it any cheaper. You might have better luck calling whichever junk yard has the head unit and see if they have the amp too. I wasn’t that lucky. After that, I emailed autoharnesshouse.com and they sent me a link for the head unit harness, usb cable, and amp cable. That cost me $280 shipped. Last, I ordered new clips from Amazon for $12, part number 90467-09240.

All in it cost me $1217. Installation was easy, but removing the panels behind the back seat kind of sucked. Was it worth it just to stay OEM and get android auto and apple carplay? For me and my OCD tendencies, absolutely, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

 

Can an aftermarket amp be used or does it have to be the JBL OEM ?

 

That' a great deal! I have been lurking on here and youtube for about 2 years waiting to find enough info for me to feel comfortable doing this. I just found a 2022 non-nav HU from a new Tacoma on eBay for $520 and ordered the harness from autoharnesshouse. Looking forward to the swap and finally getting Carplay in my truck!

 

Complete success on my head unit upgrade!! I had a non JBL system in my 2018 so this install was a little easier. So I found an EnTune 3.0 head unit that came out of a 2022 Tacoma on Ebay for $520 with free shipping + tax. It is model #86140-04230, a non-NAV unit. I bought the harness adapter and usb adapter from autoharnesshouse.com for $175. So to have a new HU that supports Apple Car Play it cost me around $775. Way cheaper and better integrated than the Alpine I was looking at for over $1000.

So since I went from NAV to no NAV on the head unit you lose a few things on the center display between the gauges. No song or music info, no compass, and no speed limit signs. However using Car Play more that makes up for it because the apple maps show the speed limit and whatever music you use shows on the stereo. I never used the music info feature at the gauges anyway. It's kinda redundant. I don't need the compass or the speed limits when the map is on the stereo anyway. Also the newer head units don't have a CD player. I didn't use mine much so it's no big loss. I have been using Spotify for years...

The positives far outweigh the negatives. Here are the positives:
The screen is an inch bigger, the backup camera looks clearer on the new screen, you retain all factory functionality on steering wheel controls, factory built in mic still works, sound clarity on calls is better, the touch display is responsive you don't feel like you have to mash on it, in dash USB worked perfectly for connecting my phone for Car Play and actually charges it (iPhone 13 pro) and Siri functionality while using Car Play is very responsive.

The install was incredibly easy and only took me about 10 minutes.

Next up is looking into wireless adapters for Car Play.

Anyone a super guru about these headunits and part #s?? There’s some other cars that seem like they’d be a direct plug n play just like the taco ones with the right harnesses. Much more reasonably priced than taco specific ones

 

Do I need to worry bout buying a locked head unit from Ebay ?

If I purchase the Nav version for my Entune non jbl Nav version, will I retain the info on center screen ? Or just lose it no matter what with the transplant ?

 

Never heard of a "locked HU" They are not coded like some other manufacturers, like VW, do.

You only lose some of the center cluster stuff if you go aftermarket or you go from a NAV to non NAV unit. What I'm not sure of is if you'll have all the electrical hook ups for the NAV portion of the HU available in the truck.

 

Yeah, that person has no idea what they are talking about. I bought mine from an online recycler. It's from a Sienna. Different part # obviously. No locks.

What is the part #? Also, get a picture of the back of the unit to see the connections.

 

Looking at those two listings on eBay.

 

Are they both 86140 04230? Those units in the pictures have no "stand alone GPS, nor will they have XM. They will work perfectly in your truck if it has no GPS.

 

My truck has xm and built in Nav

 

Then you will lose them with that unit. If you pull yours out you will see the extra box underneath. 86140-04200 is the unit you want and even then you have to make sure it has the GPS "box"
