Toyota World Noob. Great site and resource!

Started Taco about three weeks ago and following message came up on JBL Premium Media Player "New Software Not Compatible with the System". Touch screen sensitivity works inconsistently - sometimes you have to push icon repeatedly with varying amounts of pressure and also lost some menu functionality. No longer have clock option/feature and setting to adjust touch screen sensitivity- both disappeared. Interestingly though I gained a new app "Driver Easy Speak". Service desk at dealership gave "deer in the headlight" look but was more than happy to write-up $$$ service order. I refused and was then referred to salesman who told me "Driver Easy Speak" is only available on Highlanders and Vans. Hands free iPhone 5S, iPod port, XM radio still work like normal. Salesman recommended I visit Toyota Secure Download website but got nowhere - last update in 2017 - followed instructions - Taco would not even recognize USB thumb drive. Salesmen told me sometimes downloads come through satellite and/or phone. Wonder if anyone has seen this issue before? Any thoughts or help is a appreciated.

Weird. Either Toyota pushed the wrong update to your system, or the most recent update glitched badly during install.

If you had the USB drive formatted properly, but the system wouldn't recognize it, then it's up to the dealer to flash the correct version.

First attempt I used an old 2G thumb drive. Second attempt I reformatted a newer 2G thumb drive before doing download update. Did not make a difference. Still not recognized. I'm going to call dealer on other side of town to see if they'll be more helpful. If I don't get anywhere, then I'll try corporate. I too suspect a rogue update or glitch. Frustrating to have a semi functioning touch screen.

Called Toyota Corporate who was helpful but unable to solve problem by advising me to reset player holding power button in the off position for more than 5 seconds. Corporate referred me back to dealership. Spoke with salesman who sold me Taco(good guy - he was not working when I first stopped at Dealership) and he arranged for service to "flash" truck at no cost even though I'm outside of warranty due to miles - just have to wait a couple a few days before appointment. All agree it appears likely I got a rogue download possibly by satellite or through phone. The "Driver Easy Speak" is a function available only on the Sienna and Highlander models.

Having the same problem with my 16 trd off road, they told me it could be the radio, which is under warranty but has a $50 deductible, or it could be the $180 SD card that's not under warranty. Interested in seeing how yours was resolved.

    UPDATE and resolution!

Had truck/radio "flashed" reset at no cost to me. Unfortunately no luck. Diagnostics could not be run because head unit was "locked" out. Dealership wanted $ to continue moving forward. I insisted it appears to be a software issue not hardware and therefore I should not be responsible. Thought we were at a stalemate so I left PO and called corporate again to report my frustration (only to discover it's a third party company handling calls to 800 number). I escalated the matter. I believe at same time dealership quality manager pursued issue on his end. About two weeks ago, I get a call from dealership informing me my unit will be replaced by Toyota and installed at dealership at no cost to me despite being out of warranty. Radio ships, appointment scheduled.

Resolution at last! Yesterday I bring my Taco back dealership for new head unit. So happy to have a correctly functioning head unit. You can not imagine how annoying a semi functioning radio with touch screen sensitivity that sometimes works regardless how much pressure or frequency of touches until it's your unit!

I've been told the issue likely resulted from a corrupted update coming through iPhone running in the background. I was told old head unit will be sent back to manufacturer who has the ability to unlock unit and repair.

Happy to be a Tacoma owner again.

I have the same issues except with no touch screen sensitivity problem. Was the lack of clock and software error message fixed by flashing the system, or did they need the new head unit to be resolved?

Has anyone found a fix for this that doesn't require a new head unit. I have a 2016 SR5 and upgraded the head-unit to the OEM Nav unit. Got an update Friday (2/15) night and now the touch screen is off and I get a warning message saying system no longer compatible, and no longer have the clock display. I called Toyota and they told me because I swapped the units they can't do anything. Local dealership is working on maybe getting me a new one but waiting to hear back. Im going to be mad if Toyota pushed me the bad update and won't replace or fix.

Would love to know if someone found a fix other than replacing.

I have the JBL headunit in my 18 and cannot update it at all. Just shows greyed out buttons. It will just sit there if you try to OTA update it. The head unit works fine but has never been updated since I got it 18 months ago

Having same issue as OP. Just happened today with my 2016, same exact symptoms, except it’s 2024.

Any resolution or updates since last post?
