It looks like we can't get the JBL top premium sound package for the manual transmission off-road trim.
Is the JBL speaker package and apps worth paying attention to, over the 'standard' premium package with navigation and other?
    Thanks, all.

Pretty sure you get everything/app wise with the prem. & tech. package. The JBL includes upgrades to the
    speakers an amp and sub.

Thanks, that's the information I am interested in. I am going to have a listen, but the Tacoma guy at the dealer doesn't know much about the apps and tech. If the apps/bluetooth stuff is the same and only the speakers/amp are the uptake, then for sure I can upgrade speakers and such aftermarket.

I do not know a whole lot about the apps, but did get the chance to listen to both JBL and non-JBL. For me the JBL system was so much better than the non-JBL. I will be going with the JBL. I would go and listen like they mentioned above. Just my thoughts.

I thought it sounded great. A thought on aftermarket stereo systems (as I've had a few over the years) if you pay someone to do it, there's a chance they'll not put everything back together QUITE the way it was assembled from factory. In the long run, maybe months maybe years, you'll have stuff rattling in the door or wires crossed that shouldn't be. If you do it yourself you have to know what you're doing. Anytime you start ripping the truck apart from the factory it is never an easy task to get all of the little plastic clips and things back JUST the right way they came from the factory. My days of eye popping bass and deafening treble are over. I test drove a truck with the JBL and thought it sounded great. Of course I spent years in the military around jets, mortar and guns...my hearing is not what is used to be. Plenty of thump in the JBL for this 35 year old man.

I think so. I would have refused the truck if it came without it. Phenomenal Sound full frequency at lower volumes. Best $800 option I spent on the truck.

The main complaint I've read on here about the JBL upgrade is that the sub takes up a lot of the storage space under the back seats.

How much space can it possibly take up? It's the size of a large shoebox. Well worth the exchange in space for the improvement in audio quality IMO. Don't see storage space the size of a shoebox being a deal killer, in the grand scheme of things on a pickup truck of this size.

Agreed, it's not that much space in the grand scheme. Look at post #13 here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...game-fp-p-t-package-jbl.394121/#post-10886101

Looks like the sub takes up one of the two whole compartments though? Not sure if I'm reading that thread correctly.

Hmm, does this mean I can get the JBL with a manual transmission? Maybe I am looking it up wrong, and it's really a bummer, why push for premium sound only for auto transmission? Oh well, I may end up buying an automatic, going to drive one now.
    Thanks all for the replies.

Apparently so. However, I am pretty much a strictly Bluetooth user anyway, so that's not a deal-breaker for me.

Even the lower end Entune plays mp3/wma. They just left that out. Pretty sure the head unit is identical or nearly so. My question: The JBL sub has the amp with it in the enclosure from what I remember. To me that says the amp is probably a class D and dedicated to the sub itself. So is there a separate amp for the door speakers or are they powered by the headunits internal amplifier? Amped door speakers go a long way...

Hoping the same! Could have sworn I've seen others say they've used a usb drive and it played their
music and in my 2011 (no entune, just the standard head unit) it's almost all I play(mp3).
