My 2005 prerunner stopped running at 310k miles. It was blowing bubbles in the radiator overflow reservoir before it gave up the ghost, so probably head gasket (or a crack somewhere).

I don’t think it’s worth doing head work on an engine with that many miles. My mechanic checked his usual sources for a used motor and its all 120-150k miles for $6000+. I found a JDM motor from a well regarded seller with low mileage. Is there anything I need to watch out with the JDM when it comes to compatibility with my truck? I can’t find much online.

well with swapping a few JDM Engines in my life, the wiring harness could be "backwards" like draped off to the other side or going a different way. Sensors may not be in the same places. some emissions features may not be present at all, so keep that in mind. the ECU could be very different, but if i was getting one id get Engine, wiring harness and ECU. Japanese Transmissions shift "harder" often then American transmissions not as smooth as ours

also, important to note, often electrical connector and sensors get busted off being shipped over. keep your original engine to steal random parts from.
