JDM 3RZ DISTRIBUTOR TO COIL "Solved"

    Hey guys,

    So I decided to take a gamble and purchased a JDM 3rz Distributor type motor and covert it to Coil type.

    I was able to get the head drilled out in my garage, no special tools.

    I'm starting a new YouTube page, I'm focusing on building and fixing on a budget.
    Also there is also a overbearing amount of jeep owners and jeep crap.. haha

    Have a Toyota in Portland Vancouver area and need to have some work done, we would love to film you toyota on our next podcast cast.

    I need to do exactly this. Is that hole for the cam sensor?

    Yes it's the one that I drilled into the Japanese 3rz motor I just got... takes about 3 hours a drill Dremel and some patience.

    If this is something you need todo right now I can talk you threw the steps and give you some raw unedited video ....

    It's going to be free on YouTube anyways . But that's 4 mouths out after we get back from taking this build to the sand dunes....

    If you can wait it will be worth it but I understand if it's a driver...

    I’m the opposite I have a jdm motor with the distributor hole and the cam sensor hole

    How far did you have to take apart the engine to do this?

    You have to remove the valve cover, intake and injector rails... I did this on a engine stand, I recommend drilling it outside of the truck...

    Now in 1997 Toyota, made Distributor type and Coil type, you more then likely got a later engine.

    If im understanding you correctly you have a Coil type engine and you need a Distributor type?
    If that's the case the sensor can just be left unplugged.
    You have to time the engine to the Distributor, if you don't have one I have the old Distributor you can have.

    My current dead engine has a coil pack. I need to replace it with a JDM engine I have not yet ordered. I am having a hard time finding a coil pack engine, so may have to get a distributor style engine and modify it.

    We had the same problem as well that's why we went with the distributor type. I do know that another shipment of motors will be available in about a week. We didn't have time to wait because the planned sand dunes trip coming up for the truck's debut.
    Be very cautious who you buy a motor from there are a bunch of companies out there that are running scams and have Google ads out when you look up your motor do a Better Business Bureau search of engine shopper LLC they are associated with any of the companies are trying to buy the motor from. Although my experience was not pleasant yours may be with them.

    What I did to find my motor is look up on Google JDM and Jump forward a few pages and start looking for guys that are located in California or Texas. If you do not see a picture of the motor do not by the motor. Most companies have a 90day no start warranty.

    Now if you do happen to get The distributor type I have already figured it out and took pics videos and made notes...

    If your looking for a head I have one here with 10k it's new, I still have the receipt for it... that we would have to sell....

    Actually way easier to do D coil pack to distributor all you have to do is just leave the sensor on plug but still in the hole where the coil pack is you will see that there is a cover plate that you could pop out with the screwdriver th

    How did this turn out? I'm curious.

    I'm also curious if anyone has ever went from dual coil packs to four coil over plugs...

    I swapped a jdm 3rz and it had the hole for the distributor but also the cam sensor as well which was weird. But the cam sensor was in the side still so I left it there it’s not powered or anything since I have a distributor

    Cheater......he used the sensor as a plug.....
    just plain crazy, as crazy as me using a freeze plug to seal the distributor hole.....

    Oh okay, I think I see what you mean, so you have a distributor, but I'm trying to go with a better setup than what I have, which is coils on top of the boots for the spark plugs instead of two coil packs, which is what I have, and I'm trying to find out if anyone has ever made the same change so I can try to do it as well

    Have to have wire harness off 2001 to 2004 off 3rz or 2rz....
    and same year ecm matched to tranny - manual or auto....
    abs system would have to work with new ecm, lack of abs on old truck could sink this,,....new ecm may not work on old non abs truck......

    Not sure why u would do this, plug over coils are subject to alot of heat....
    the external coils will last longer and show no performance difference.......
    If the tube seals leak oil in future it can fry the coil over..

    Not really lmao been 35k now on the motor no problems. I honestly didn’t notice the cam sensor till I installed it and I was like welp.
