Another option I've used before on really hard ground is drill into the ground along side the box with a hammer drill and pound in 5/8" rebar pins .

Just make sure to leave them lower than the box top and make sure to dull the tops

I did two boxes for a client last year, a 4'x10' and a 4'x12', i drove 3/8 lag screws into the sides to the posts, i treated the cut ends of the redwood.

 

It's called by both terms down here

Just build a box from 2" thick cedar or redwood to the height you want and chuck it on the ground and fill with dirt

That will work

 

I would suggest predrilling and using long screws to build the box , less likely to pull apart when someone uses the box as a lever for the shovel or pitchfork

 

Cedar and redwood are naturally rot resistant because of the naturally occuring oils and tannins in them , pine is terrible for that

X2 on the redwood. I had a redwood deck for almost 20 years and decided to remove it. I used the removed redwood to build a treehouse for my son.

Another nice wood to use is yellow cedar. Due to the fiberous nature of the wood there are no splinters.

If I look out in my small shed I still have some clear all heart redwood 1X4 pieces of wood left over.

Yellow Cedar is actually a Cypress and not a true cedar and it lacks the rot resistant qualities of Western Red Cedar

It's garbage , literally .

It's ground up sawdust and garbage bags , I don't know how it got it's " eco friendly " label as all it is , is garbage making one more stop on it's way to the landfill .

At least wood is renewable
