I am assuming that part of your job is to research your companies compliance for existing laws. I would make sure that you document your discussions with the boss so if it comes back to haunt your company it will not be your word against his. You would not win the battle without the documented evidence.

John, do what Tom said, Document everything, saves my ass more times then you can believe.

Keith, just wait, we had a similar operation up here, tree fell 5 feet the Opposite direction he meant to cut it and fell and was stuck against a lamp post. That was a funny conversation with the fire department haha.

    Morning everyone.

John, ^^ these are my thoughts as well. Get it documented as to what you have told your boss. I've run into this with IT. I'm not supposed to install software that you don't' have a license for, but I'm also paid to do what the customer wants. I have to get it writing that they acknowledge that they are telling me to do something that violates the license agreements to cover my own ass.

We will, of course, need pics if said trees are felled onto house or other structures in the yard. Bonus points for taking down overhead power or cable plant.

I am saving all of the emails for certain. Just came out of his office. He is still wrong, but it's his company and his problem. He accused me of not being open minded.

I beg to differ, as long as no one gets hurt, I don't mind a little destruction.

    The owner

It is a question of how much material (fluorescent lamps ) we accumulate on site. EPA requires that we register with them should our accumulated volume surpass 5000kg. The owner argues that this does not include "low mercury" lamps. The regs state that low mercury lamps have to pass the TCLP test to be exempt from the reporting or any of the regulations governing waste lamp disposal/handling. The EPA also states that the generator, or in this case handler, of the material is responsible for having the lamps tested to ensure that they pass the TCLP test. He thinks that is ridiculous and that we should rely on the manufacturer claims of exemption (they don't actually make any).

So not only is he wrong, he's responsible to have them checked, and is relying on a manufacturers claim that they are safe even though they make no such claim.

    You boss is an idiot.

    Sounds like my boss

John, there is another method, you can make an Anonymous call to the EPA asking for verification, and relay their answer to your boss.

That proves you right, AND no one gets in shit.

I am leaving it be. If we get audited, I can always say "told you so" later.

Thanks Chris, you are right. I am going to look around and tolerate this until I find something better.

I really do like where I work and what I do, I just hate dealing with the owner. He never has time for me and when he does, he usually finds a way to insult my intelligence. He is very closed minded.

That being said, I do have a TREMENDOUS amount of freedom here. I pretty much set my own schedule and am allowed to do what I want. The money is not great, but it is 3 miles from home and the freedom is a nice perk.
